As an ecologist, Sandra Steingraber spent her professional life observing how living things interact with their environments.  Now, 38 and pregnant, she had become a habitat—for a population of one.

Having Faith is Steingraber's exploration of the intimate ecology of motherhood. Using her scientist's eye to study the biological drama of new life being knit from the molecules of air, food, and water flowing into her body, she looks at the environmental hazards that now threaten pregnant and breastfeeding women, and examines the effects these toxins can have on a child. Having Faith makes the metamorphosis of a few cells into a baby astonishingly vivid, and the dangers to human reproduction urgently real.

This book is very scientifically minded but beautifully written in a storyline narrative. The information is so compelling and pertinent to our times that it was almost impossible to put down.

Despite the title, it is non-religious,written by an ecologist/embryologist/professor who has a baby at age 38, and she goes in great depth & detail about fetal development at cellular levels from day one... and all the things that interrupt those levels. Like what 1 µg of mercury does, vs. 4 µg mercury, to a developing brain; or why babies whose mothers took thalidomide on day 11 have no ears, while the ones whose mothers took it days 15-17 were born with no arms, and days 23-25-no legs, etc. She covers old disasters (Minimata mercury poisoning of entire villages in Japan) to current environmental toxins and birth defects. It was incredibly eye-opening, I'd recommend it to any science geek, but especially to any parents wanting to know more. The scariest part of her research is that cognitive & developmental impairment is seen from the average background levels of many toxins in the human population-no wonder there are so many learning disorders & diseases. Even though the subject matter is largely somber, the wealth of information inside made me giddy-finally the full story, the details, the hows and whys of why bad things are bad, what they do, and how they work.

I like knowing the whole story, and the author leaves no stone unturned. I can't recommend it highly enough.

Even though this book is 20 years old at this point, the information is still so relevant and important. As a physician who specializes in fertility and women's health, I wish all physicians would read this and encourage their patients to read as well. At first I was annoyed by the typos...but once I got into the meat of the story and the research, all typos were forgiven. I've studied environmental medicine and the health repercussions for years, and so far this is the most moving book I've read on the topic. Keep going, Sandra! And thank you for doing what you do!

This book is an eye opener!!! It is a must read for those planning on having a baby in a couple years, are pregnant or have children. I bought this along with Sandra's other two books and could not put them down. Packed with research, they've helped me navigate the complex subject of chemicals in our everyday environments. The effects are poorly understood but Sandra took on the task of wading through the research that has been done to discuss what is known about some, what isn't known about many and what to watch out for. Her books have helped me see things in a new way and confirmed a few of my suspicions. I highly recommend this book!!!!! 5 stars !!!!! Thank you Sandra for all of your hard work !

If you have ever read any of her other books, articles, or seen her video, "Living Downstream," you understand what a passionate and clear-headed thinker Dr. Steingraber is. This is more personal and intimate a read of how we are poisoning ourselves.

Steingraber is a poetic scientist. She writes about detailed (and sometimes frightening) processes of fetal development and the influence of the outer environment and the mother's system, but it reads like prose. This memoir/reference is something I had always thought should be written, and I was relieved when I found it that I wouldn't have to be the one to do it. An important and thought-provoking read for anyone who is considering starting a family or anyone who thinks that "environmental concerns" don't affect them directly. Sandra is also a fantastic speaker and I highly suggest following her work.

I think this is a must read for women who are pregnant or soon will be pregnant. It tells a wonderful story while being very fact-full and informative. You might think it has to do with religious faith and in a way it does, but it really is about Steingraber's experience having a daughter, who she named Faith. So if you are turned off by this being a bible thumper, consider this again. Consider this in light of the many facets of becoming a mother - fetal development, environmental exposures, maternity, interpersonal relations, etc.

Currently pregnant, I hesitated to read this book because I didn't want to become more paranoid than I already am about various environmental problems. I was impressed by both Steingraber's voice - the intimate telling of her own story is funny, telling, and compelling without any of the other details - and with the unremitting rigor with which she marshals her facts. Instead of being overwhelemed by information on one or the other side of various US environmental debates, I found that the author brings a very well-researched and sensible perspective to the conversation. Beautifully written as well as informative - well worth my time.

This book is awful. I had to read it for a course I was taking and it was the worst book I've read in awhile. While I understand that the author is an ecologist and a biologist, she could not seem to decide whether she was writing a birth memoir or a dry thesis on the development of a fetus. I do not recommend.
