I didn't like this story as much as the previous ones, but it's still very enjoyable and informative. The late 19th and early 20th centuries were full of technical innovations. Well written and with a very good narrator, except for the American accent of the heroine, which doesn't quite make it. I just wish there was more romance.

This is the 4th book in the Victorian Mystery series by Robin Paige. Kate and Charles have married, though his family, particularly his mother, are not pleased about his choice of wife. They are asked by their dear friend, and motorcar fanatic, Bradford Marsden, to host a chase race, where the motorcars will compete to find a hot air balloon's landing spot. A local man, who apparently has died of natural causes, is found, but the locals feel that he may have been frightened to death by a motorcar. We meet Mr. Rolls and Mr. Royce prior to their joining forces to build British motorcars. The balloon is sabotaged and Kate joins the chase to find her husband. During the race, one of the competitors is killed and the death appears suspicious. Charles and Kate work together to solve the mystery. We get to see Amelia (Kate's maid and now housekeeper) and Amelia's husband, who works for Marsden. While I found the historical detail fascinating, especially around the cars and the variations on how they were powered and engineered, I didn't enjoy this one as much as the ones earlier in the series. It was still good, and I will definitely read the next in the series.

Perfect English murder mystery by a favorite Author. I have to wait until the release the next one in audio !

A terrific read and I am so enjoying my reread of this fine series. Historical detail is excellent and the characters come alive!

This episode, with a fairly newly married Kate and Charles Sheridan, illustrates the excitement and the danger in the new emerging automobile industry. An auto and balloon "race" turns deadly for one competitor and involves the Bishop's Keep household and many they hold dear.

On to the next in the series!

The third in the series finds our heroes married and still living in Bishops Keep. The interest of the neighbor's son in early cars takes center stage as balloon and car chase comes to town along with Rolls and Royce. Several cars are in the race -electric steam and gas powered- with very antagonistic drivers. The balloon is sabotaged and then there is a deadly car wreck. Were these accidents or intentional murder? Much more science than usual with actual fingerprints and microscopic evidence used in detail. Very engaging look at early forensics. Love these characters and the guest star approach to each mystery.

LOVE this series. IF you are into Edwardian and Post-WWI Downton Abbey, you might really like this series. Detailed research into historic, political, and architectural history enhances the excellently plotted storylines. Historic characters abound, and are brought to life for modern readers. Since I also read histories of this era, I can say I haven't seen a 'misstep' historically. THANK you for the people I have grown to love. Not for everyone, though. You have to love a more cozy mystery (vs. say a graphically explicit action-suspense story like NCIS, or something). And, you sort of need to like 'details' that some might say bog down the action. I LOVE more classic mysteries like Agatha Christie, P. D. James, and Colin Dexter's Morse. Recently, I also like Sheila Connolly's series titles. THIS fits right in with those.

Learning about Victorian technology at the same time a great mystery with twists and turns. Great development of the marriage of Charles & Kate with added dimension of women advancement.

As I have lived in the Tendring area for forty years, I was going round the district visualising the plot. The Marlborough Head stand on the opposite corner t the Essex Rose tearoom. I wonder what it was in Kate's time. Love all the characters, and next way they interact with each other. I look to reading the next one.
