About the Author

Alfred Russel Wallace, Wallace was born 8 January 1823, and died 7 November 1913. From 1844 he taught for a time in Leicester, and there he met Henry Walter Bates, who roused his enthusiasm for the study of insects. After a brief return to surveying, he agreed with Bates to go to the Amazon, and in April 1848 they set sail, intending to support themselves by acquiring collections for sale. Edited by David Knight.

Erudite, absorbing and readable. A stunning portrait of a fascinating part of the world. Written with the authority and confidence of a great Victorian scientist, revealing inspiring thirst for knowledge, and the then fashionable but flawed drive for collections at any cost. And some intriguing harbingers of the ecological perils faced by the paradisical Islands of the archipelago. Read alongside Darwin.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great read but am I missing something by using a Kindle !!

Great historic book, a massive amount of detailed descriptions of what must have been an epic adventure.

What I'm missing - when I purchased both volumes on my Kindle (to be fair at only 99p each I think) I was looking forward to the illustrated version of the book - but found very quickly it has no illustrations at all, which is very disappointing.

Also the second volume has some very annoying spelling errors throughout which shows a lack of proof reading (unless it's like this in the original).

I have since purchased a physical book which is both annotated and illustrated and I can highly recommended this version which is annotated by John van Wyhe., The Annotated Malay Archipelago by Alfred Russel Wallace (Singapore: NUS Press, 2015, 836 pp.) and contains both volumes.

Maybe I need to read the kindle manual to find out how to look at the illustrations !!

1.0 out of 5 stars Oh disappointment!

Woe is me for judging an edition by its cover alone! Why have Dodo Press bothered to issue an edition stripped of its Forward, its Dedication to Darwin, its Contents, its Index, and all its maps and illustrations, especially when we're about to accompany Wallace on his tortuous itinerary across a maze of islands and fully appreciate his descriptions of bizarre creatures. I shall now attempt to exchange my Dodo Press Vols I and II, for the Periplus Classics Series version which several have reviewed with love and reverence, and which I trust, at 512 pages, happily means Vols I and II come in combination.
