Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

Book 8 in the Ranger’s Apprentice series takes Will, his mentor, Halt, and their friend Horace to the kingdom of Clonmel. There Halt confronts painful memories from his past, while the three friends work to subvert a devious plot by a cult religion that seeks to gain control by sending in bands of marauding invaders, then offering a god that can protect the people from them. Although the many references to previous adventures slow the pace at times, there’s wit as well as action here, and the revelation of Halt’s backstory adds a new dimension to the saga. Grades 5-8. --Carolyn Phelan

John Flanagan grew up in Sydney, Australia hoping to be a writer. It wasn't until he wrote a highly uncomplimentary poem about a senior executive at the agency he worked, however, that his talent was revealed. It turned out one of the company directors agreed with John's assessment of the executive, and happily agreed to train John in copywriting. After writing advertising copy for the next two decades, John teamed with an old friend to develop a television sitcom, Hey Dad!, which went on to air for eight years. John began writing Ranger's Apprentice for his son, Michael, ten years ago, and is still hard at work on the series. He currently lives in the suburb of Manly, Australia, with his wife. In addition to their son, they have two grown daughters and four grandsons.

Halt, Will and Horace leave Araluen for the island of Hibernia in this, the 8th adventure in The Ranger's Apprentice series.

In accordance with Araluen's growing prominence in world affairs, King Duncan has charged Ranger Commander Crowley with creating a Special Task Group for situations that require more than the 'one riot, one Ranger' approach. Halt and his former apprentice Will have been selected to oversee this new creation. Will's best friend Horace, one of the most skilled and accomplished warriors in the land, will also serve in the specialized force. And it seems like the Task Group has sprung to life at just the right time. Trouble is brewing on the neighboring island of Hibernia and it's the kind of trouble that could pose a serious threat to Araluen peace and prosperity.

Years ago when Halt and Crowley were young men, they faced off against a religious cult known as the Outsiders. These seemingly harmless worshippers promised the protection of their benevolent - and heretofore unheard of - god to communities threatened by murderous bandits. They merely required offerings of gold to strengthen their god's power. Unbeknownst to the villagers, the Outsiders and the bandits were in league with one another. Once they judged that a village had been stripped bare, they would steal away into the night - taking the golden offerings with them.

Now it seems that the Outsiders are back and they are stronger than ever. As their following has grown, so has their ambition. They haven't given up their hunger for gold, of course, but gold alone is no longer enough to satisfy Tennyson, the charismatic Outsider leader. Already five of the six Hibernian kingdoms are under his control. The sixth, the Kingdom of Clonmel, is poised to fall. But Halt, Will and Horace have a plan to defeat Tennyson and expose him as a fraud. All of them are determined to see this charlatan caught, but Halt has a secret, powerful reason of his own for saving Clonmel.

Once again, Mr. Flanagan delivers a stirring adventure sure to keep readers on the edge of their seats. If you haven't read any of the previous books in the series, you could certainly pick this one up and enjoy it on its own. But do yourself a favor. Start at the beginning. You're going to want to once you read this and that way you'll have the whole rich history of this series before you start this one.

Such a great book! Just finished reading it... less than 2 days, like all the others. It's definitely one of those books you CAN NOT put down! No matter how old you are, it's a good book for ALL ages. I'm 26 and I plan to keep all of my Ranger's Apprentice books for my kids (when I have them) and might even get a set for my nephews. Funny thing is, you find people who like Ranger's Apprentice that you would never see liking to read, much less a "kid's" book. Such a breath of fresh air to read a book that's not surrounded by sex, vampires, fairy tales, or utter violence. It's almost like reading a piece of history that could have happened without being bombarded by the "in" thing to write about these days. I personally can't wait for the movie!!

Anyways, "The Kings of Clonmel" is definitely another great by John Flanagan. With this book you get to see a little more of Halt's past and for a few seconds you're sort of wondering if Halt really IS related to Will until you're introduced to Sean. Regardless, this book continuously brings out the characters' personalities and I enjoyed another adventure with Halt, Horace, and Will. Best part is when Will is reintroduced to Castle Redmont when they start a new Ranger's Special Task Group. How awesome is that? You get another glimpse into the relationships in Redmont between Halt and Pauline... and the growing love of Will and Alyss. Like I said... a glimpse because the adventure begins and you're off to Hibernia, Halt's homeland.

The only thing I didn't like 100% was the angle that Mr. Flanagan puts towards religions... granted, it's not entirely negative, but he doesn't get into how religious people were for the time period he's writing in. Yes, I know it's fiction, but he does make a jab or two at religion. Regardless, he does discuss how cults can ruin a people and how easily susceptible people can be by a charismatic leader. Anyways, GREAT BOOK and I cannot wait for Book 9 to get released! :)

The plot was well organized, until the end where the conclusion got sloppy. Overall still a fun book to read.

As has been any of the books in this series, this was another well mastered story. Enjoyable from beginning to end. Artfully told with a well planned plot. I enjoy not only the stories of the Rangers Apprentice but the characters as well, the more of them you read the more you become attached and care for each character. As I said before I enjoyed this book as much as the previous seven. Cannot wait to finish the last four 😢😮

When I got the first book, I wasn't expecting much. I was only looking for something to keep myself occupied. But when I began to read the book, I couldn't year myself away from it! I completely fell in love with the characters, and I felt like I could understand them. I love how the author uses words that really sum up the sentences, and I love how they fit perfectly into what he is trying to say. I don't know what I would do without these books.❤️❤️❤️

Right from the very start I have loved every volume of this fantastic series! But this book takes the cake for hilarious moments. Will, Horace, and Halt join paths once again, this time to deal with unsaveory con-men in a foreign kingdom. Since Will and Horace are older and hold more official ranks they find it easier to relax around the once intimidating figure of Halt who they have both grown to love as their dear friend. One of the perks of this matured relationship is the ability to tease and joke unceasingly. I would say my favorite moment is the conversation that turns into confrontaion between Horace and the uncooperative foreign king.
Also be prepared to dive into the history of Halt's past. The details of which are both juicy and surprising!

These books just keep getting better. I was pleased to find that the 'country' this story is set in is based off of Ireland, where I am from. I noticed Clonmel, Mountshannon, Cairnhill and Derryton (Derry, with a ton!). The names were originally Irish too. Hibernia was an excellent place to base the story, as there was already one based in Skandia (Scandinavia). I anticipate reading the next one (Halt's Peril) 😊😊.
