The sixteenth volume in the Aubrey/Maturin series, and Patrick O'Brian's first bestseller in the United States.

At the outset of this adventure filled with disaster and delight, Jack Aubrey and Stephen Maturin pursue an American privateer through the Great South Sea. The strange color of the ocean reminds Stephen of Homer's famous description, and portends an underwater volcanic eruption that will create a new island overnight and leave an indelible impression on the reader's imagination.

Their ship, the
Surprise, is now also a privateer, the better to escape diplomatic complications from Stephen's mission, which is to ignite the revolutionary tinder of South America. Jack will survive a desperate open boat journey and come face to face with his illegitimate black son; Stephen, caught up in the aftermath of his failed coup, will flee for his life into the high, frozen wastes of the Andes; and Patrick O'Brian's brilliantly detailed narrative will reunite them at last in a breathtaking chase through stormy seas and icebergs south of Cape Horn, where the hunters suddenly become the hunted.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Though the Jack Aubrey-Stephen Maturin books can be profitably read separately, as fans know, together they read as one long, wonderful novel. This 16th installment (following The Truelove ) is no doubt the best chapter yet. In the early 1800s, Bluff Jack, captain of the privateer Surprise , steers his frigate across the Pacific to South America, around Cape Horn and into the Atlantic, taking French and American prizes, fighting off a Yankee Man of War and suffering dire eye and leg wounds for his trouble. Subtle Stephen, ship's doctor and British intelligence agent, almost pulls off a coup in Peru and must escape across the Andes, losing some toes to frostbite for his efforts. Favorite characters reappear here: Killick, Jack's crabby steward; Sarah and Emily Sweeting, precocious Melanesian waifs attached to Maturin's sick-berth; Sam, Jack's illegitimate black son and rising Churchman. The naval actions are bang-on and bang-up--fast, furious and bloody--and the Andean milieu is as vivid as the shipboard scenes. As usual, readers can revel in the symbiotic friendship of Jack and Stephen, who make for a marvelous duo, whether in their violin and cello duets or in their sharp dialogue. If O'Brian hasn't quite had a break-out book yet, then this deserves to be it. 40,000 first printing; $50,000 ad/promo; author tour.

From Library Journal

On the high seas in the early years of the 19th century, when full-rigged sailing ships carried cargoes of treasure and slaves and privateers were a continual threat, surgeon-spy Stephen Maturin and his good friend Capt. Jack Aubrey have set sail for South America. Their ship is a privateer with a crew more than ready to board and capture anything in their path. This 16th entry in O'Brian's long-running saga opens as the two men and their crew encounter a volcanic eruption and continues as Maturin, engaged in diplomatic scheming, heads for Peru, where he finds an exotic array of birds and animals as well as opportunities for espionage. Readers already familiar with the series will enthusiastically welcome this new chapter; others may find the references to earlier adventures and distant characters confusing. The plot groans under detailed descriptions of everything from managing the sails to galley-table etiquette. Recommended for libraries holding O'Brian's earlier works. Previewed in Prepub Alert, LJ 5/15/93.

Every Patrick O'Brien novel - especially all of the Aubrey Maturin series - should be required reading for anyone who loves a great story with compelling characters, adventure, suspense and just the slightest touch of romance. Add to that that they are steeped in actual history - based on the logbooks of the RN captains who sailed in the era about which he writes - these are history lessons in the most entertaining form imaginable. Highest recommendation i could possibly give.

One has to be a lover of Patrick O'Brian to appreciate Book 16 of this sea-going, Napoleonic War series. If you are on Book 16, you already know what I mean. It is wonderful, adventurous, humorous and a definite page turner. You will never read novels as well written as O'Brian's works. If you haven't read any of the Aubrey/Maturin novels, you must begin at the beginning with "Master and Commander". Sit back and enjoy these great tales for months, even years to come.
Hint: Don't get upset if you don't understand the operation of the ship, with it's rigging and sails and masts. The reader doesn't have to most of the time. Just be amazed that Mr. O'Brian understood it all. Perhaps by Book 10 you will comprehend it better.

Round the world adventure. Maturin’s trip in the high Andes went on a bit long, and some of Surprise’s escapes were a bit too amazing, but still a rollicking yarn.

Great nautical reading. The natural history of ocean and land animals equals Humboldt and Audubon’s experiences. The international intrigue is compelling.

Yo ho, matey! I adore the characters, the action's breathtaking, and fulfills all of my questions about the history of this era, especially from the standpoint of British History! Huzzah Patrick O'Brian!

Good read. Entertaining. I like the genre of books. Is this enough writing to satisfy the min words needed?

These novels are the best of breed, bar none. If you've read the first and haven't read every single one of the series...well, I'll never love you, nor will any of the other thousands and thousands of fans. As a blue water sailor, I join the legions of other sailors who revere these books. It's all about those who "go down to the sea in ships", but with cannons and cutlasses. But if you're not a sailor you will nevertheless less love these books because they create unforgettable characters who complexly evolve as the books move along in what is a continuing story full of danger, mystery, love, despair, honor- dishonor, failure and Phoenix-like success. Read these, you won't be sorry.

5.0 out of 5 stars An Impressive Seafaring Tale!
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on December 20, 2021
Read this book in2009, and its the 16th wonderful volume of the great "Aubrey/Maturin" series.

In this tale Jack Aubrey and his crew on their ship the "Surprise" are in pursuit after an American privateer through the Great South Sea.

While pursuing this American privateer the colour of the ocean will turn into a strange red/purple, that will be the portend of an underwater volcanic eruption.

The "Surprise" is now also a privateer because Stephen Maturin's secret diplomatic missions will become somewhat easier to undertake in South America.

While Jack manages to survive an open boat journey, and not long after will come face to face with his illegitimate son, his friend Stephen can narrowly escape the clutches of people he has offended with his failed coup, and so he has to flee into the high wastes of the Andes.

Somehow they will be able to reunite, and when together on board and sailing through stormy seas, instead of being the hunted they have now become the hunter.

What is to follow is an astounding adventure, in which Aubrey and Maturin both excel in their own favourite territory of seamanship and spying, and all this is brought to us by the author in his own remarkable and authentic way.

Highly recommended, for this is another incredible addition to this astounding series, and that's why I like to call this episode: "An Impressive Seafaring Tale"!

5.0 out of 5 stars A deeply satisfying read

The book is the conclusion to a fascinating series of adventures beginning with The Nutmeg of Consolation. The Wine-Dark Sea begins with the event of an underwater volcano eruption, through to climbing in the Peruvian mountains. There is so much more in the book than the tale of a mere naval adventure.

4.0 out of 5 stars Great Story
Reviewed in Australia on November 30, 2014
The whole series is compelling reading. Great characters, extraordinarily detailed and authentic descriptions of English naval life and life ashore in the early 19th C, and really good stories. Only a few more to go to finish the Aubrey/Maturin saga.
