Jesus: A New Understanding of God's Son Hardcover – October 20, 2009

4.8 4.8 out of 5 stars 90 ratings

Drawing on a lifetime of study and reflection, the author of the Joshua series presents his long-awaited, revelatory, and deeply personal work on Jesus.

In his immensely popular Joshua novels, Joseph Girzone depicted Jesus in the modern-day world, using compelling fiction to elucidate Jesus’ message and teachings. Now Girzone provides a powerful new perspective on Jesus. Based on scripture and written in Girzone’s lively, non-doctrinal style, it brings the theology that animates his fiction into vibrant focus.

Girzone combines the gospel accounts of Jesus’ life, personal anecdotes, tales from the Bible, and stories he has gathered from people around the world to create an uncommon and profoundly inspiring portrait. He writes with candor and grace about the revelations that shape his beliefs and the mysteries that continue to intrigue him.

The definitive statement of Girzone’s views on Jesus’ mission on earth and its meaning for today’s readers,
Jesus is Girzone’s magnum opus.

Praise for Joseph F. Girzone:
“Girzone is a graceful writer whose words seem to flow effortlessly from his pen. That is likely due to his having spent many years speaking about, contemplating and writing about a Jesus to whom people easily gravitate, a “partner” who is with us throughout all life’s events.”
-America
“Girzone draws on the wisdom of the centuries, writing [with] humanity and spirit.” –

Thick with info. Usually did about half chapter with group a week. Last 2 ch.has great info about early church setup & how the Word spread.
Couldn’t find a study guide, so Google & Wikipedia were my added reference sources.
In the early chapters, some class members said they felt immersed in Jesus’s world….could almost “feel the dust” on their feet.

This book and the description of Jesus' life and his impact upon us today is beyond comprehenson. Fr. Grizone provides an indepth review of Jesus, sometimes allowing us to see the behind scenes of what was happening when He walked this earth. This is a very good source for Bible studies.

I saw this book at the Mid-Atlantic Conference in March, held annually by America's Catholic publishers. Back home, I Ied a group of adults in reading and discussing Fr. Girzone's insightful, challenging, true to the gospels biography of Jesus. It did not disappoint; each of us has been profoundly touched.

Clearly, Father Joe has a deep, time-tested relationship with his subject. If you've read any of Girzone's Joshua series, you will appreciate that this new work is no fiction. It begins at the beginning, with the gospel birth narratives and allows the reader to walk along with Girzone and his good friend Jesus right through to the Ascension and beyond.

The book is an easy read, but not a light one. Do not read if you are not interested in deepening your friendship with Jesus or learning more about what human life felt like to the fully-God, fully-human Jesus. But, for the Christian who yearns to draw always closer to the God-man who died on our behalf, Jesus by Girzone offers a great deal.

Growing up Catholic and as a graduate of Catholic schools, I found this book extremely enlightening. I had actually learned a lot of these interpretations in school and through the priest at my current church. I find it sad that so many grow up Catholic and never know Jesus the way the author describes. The book seemed to bring all of my understanding of Jesus to the forefront to completely round out my faith. I highly recommend this book especially for those who grew up Catholic but have never felt close to Jesus or feel they need a better understanding. I can't wait to read it again, just like all of the other Joseph Girzone books I've read! After Joshua (of course), this is my favorite.

Everyone is different! I chose to read this slowly. A chapter or half chapter at a time! I let it sink in. Give me a better understand of the human Jesus and also the divine. Kinda made me feel like He was one of the fellas at the bar having a beer, but when he left you knew He was very special!

This book reveals the events of life of Jesus, The subject material is not new but the many insights that Joseph shares, all go to make it a really great read!
It’s not meant as a text on the life of Jesus, but a story about the person and life of Jesus. The twist in this is that his book goes past what the Bible translators say, the bible tell us about the person Jesus and events. So Joseph masterfully throughout the book introduces background and places you in a position to get an alternate view point, this all helps in the process of revealing Jesus, so it is a plausible retelling of The Bible stories of Jesus.
Overall: Joseph’s Roman Catholic heritage aside, it’s a book I recommend. As it makes me thirsty to delve into the Bible stories of Jesus, to seek out the person Jesus

It has been refreshing to read about such a mystical, mysterious time from the perspective of a man who has an intimate understanding of the Bible.

I recommend this book to anyone who is looking for a deeper understanding of Jesus. I have been searching for a way back to Him and this book bridged the gap from my alternative spirituality to the profound love of Jesus.

I read Fr. Girzone's Joshua series many years ago, and found it very powerful and inspiring. This book, in which he has collected his many reflections and talks on Jesus as a human being, is a wonderful help in developing a more intimate relationship with God's Son. It follows the life of Jesus chronologically in a homey, personal way that makes you feel his humanity. Highly recommended.
