This has so many things I loved. Captor/captive, mistaken identity. I love that the captor quickly became the captive. I did not find him brutal for the genre or the time period. He is a big jerk at first, but you can quickly see him falling in love with Brigitte. He wants to please her and make her happy, but makes blunders since he is an uncultured man of war who has never known tender treatment or love. He also deep down knows that Brigitte is a lady, he just doesn't want to admit it because he needs her and doesn't think a lady would ever want to be with him since he is not experienced at court and supposedly a bastard. He was raised harshly and believes everything centers on who is the strongest and taking what you want. So, yes he can be selfish and incredibly bullheaded, but also sweet and vulnerable. I liked Brigitte too, she was feisty at times, but not a harping shrew. I see a few reviewers mentioning this as "dark" but I wonder if they've read many of the earlier romance novels. Rowland is a big teddy bear compared to many of the other men in that genre.

This was an excellent read! I hated the hero until I understood why he was so apathetic, aggressive and just plain hateful. I hated the way he treated the heroine. I for the life of me cannot understand how the heroine forgave him for everything he did to her, or let him touch her for that matter. However, she did forgive him. But with all that, it was a great story and a great book. I would definitely recommend this entertaining read!

This is not my favorite time period but I do love Johanna Lindsey books and this was no exception. The characters were well developed and you truly felt the intense connection between the two characters. The misunderstandings between them were conceivable and not contrived and totally understandable. I loved Rowland as the hero - he had been raised under such tough conditions but it had not taken the very core of his good sole away from him. Several of the surprises at the end were touching effects to a beautiful love story!

I really enjoyed this book although it was kind of slow at the beginning it did not get move slow and get hung up on different parts that could've unnecessarily dragged out the plot. It was very interesting I enjoyed it very much and would not agree that she was continually raped he coerced her but she became a willing participant. I thoroughly enjoyed the book because the twist in the story was so good but I felt for the hero because of his tortured upbringing.

This novel had me in its grip right from the start. It had a rawness and grittiness that I hadn't felt with other Johanna Lindsey books. It certainly kept me guessing all the way through....so not your typical romance novel that tends to be more predictable. Lots of twists and turns in the plot. I didn't always like the characters or agree with their decisions, however, I found the story gripping and couldn't put it down.

In the beginning Rowland does really mess up stuff to Brigitte that honestly almost made me put down the book. He is cruel to her thinking she is a servant who is below him, which is accurate to the attitudes at the time, but still cruel no less. He did come from a cruel home and abusive family, so it is all he has known before Brigitte. He goes through genuine character growth after falling in love with Brigitte and you see that he becomes a good person due to that love.

The romantic story ofRoland and Brigitte was a lovely read. It warms the heart and leaves you with everything an HEA at the end of a well written story should. Loved every minute of this read.

Rowland is a big bumbling lovable oaf. Brigette is prideful but sweet. I loved these two! 🌟 🌟 🌟 🌟
Another great book by Johanna Lindsey. ❤️

An oldie but a goody...not JL’s best but not even in the bottom offerings which are miles better than most books these days. Funny thing about this book and me, I forgot I owned this book and bought the kindle version and got to page 20 wondering why it seemed familiar and then went over to my bookshelf and found the paperback ... but I enjoyed (re)reading it anyway.
Spoiler alert: I loved the twin twist!!! Slightly sad the twin’s story does not exist...
