Here are two holiday mysteries set in remote, snow-covered regions of Victorian Britain–where the nights are indeed silent but all is not calm, and where some will sleep in eternal peace.

A CHRISTMAS BEGINNING
While spending Christmas on the island of Anglesey off the coast of Wales, Superintendent Runcorn of Scotland Yard, a lonely bachelor, stumbles upon the lifeless body of the vicar’s younger sister in the village churchyard. Everyone insists that only a stranger to the island could have committed the heinous crime, but the evidence proves otherwise. Intending to uncover the identity of the ruthless killer, Runcorn never dreams that the case may also, miraculously, open the door to a new future for himself.

A CHRISTMAS GRACE
With Christmas just around the corner, Thomas Pitt’s sister-in-law, Emily Radley, is suddenly called from London to be with her dying aunt on the western coast of Ireland. Emily soon discovers that painful memories of an unsolved murder haunt the lonely Irish town and sets out to unmask the culprit. When a lone shipwreck survivor washes up onshore, he brings with him not only the key to solving the terrible crime but the opportunity for the townspeople to make peace with the past–and with one another.

I was pleasantly surprised by the two mysteries. In "A Christmas Beginning", Runcorn takes his Christmas holiday on an island off the coast of Wale. Alone, he has time to reflect on his life. His involvement in a murder, brings to the forefront how he envies Monk's ability to move among polite society. He recognizes the similarities he has with Monk. Monk and his drive to find justice no matter what the cost and his drive to rise to the fop of the police department no matter what the cost. But more importantly he finds that dreams can come true.
In "A Christmas Grace" , Emily Radley, the sister-in-law of the intrepid Thomas Pitt spends the Christmas Holiday with her aunt Susannah Boss. Long estranged from her family, Susannah is dying and wants to come to peace with her family. Reluctantly, Emily goes to Ireland to be with heart. Emily comes to the realization that she missed so much by cutting ties with her aunt and how much is unknown of her husband Jack. Emily not only discovers the answer to the "curse" of the village as well as what she is lacking at home.
Fantastic read anytime of the year!

I enjoy these mysteries which put us in touch with peripheral characters from her main Victorian series. Since I make a point to read everything in these series, I feel a kinship with the Monks and the Pitts, and their families and others. Thank you Anne Perry for providing me many, many hours of entertainment and excellent insights into our Victorian roots.

Do you like a "mystery break" for yourself during the busy holiday season? Not only does this keep you in the holiday mood but it is a pair of enticing stories with characters you will care about and a climax for which you will be reading in earnest. The genre is well-honed and written in the warm, thoughtful style Anne Perry always delivers. The settings are particularly well written, so much so that as you read, you feel even more warm and cozy not being there with the characters but you empathize fully. If you like to travel to Wales or the west coast of Ireland but wonder how the people live during the bleak cold of winter, and a century earlier to boot, this author can't be beat for putting you completely in time and place. Grab your tea or coffee pot, and take a break from the pressures of the holiday season, or just the drab of winter, and you can dream about when you can pick up this book and get away to another place.

These are two more great stories with secondary characters from her novels featuring Charlotte and Thomas Pitt or Monk. Close relatives and friends are the feature mystery-solvers in this series of novels for Christmas. Great gifts for those of us who love Anne Perry's writing!

I like the author and novels. Unfortunately, the book itself was improperly constructed and half the pages fell out

I really enjoyed the first story, A CHRISTMAS BEGINNING. The questions and realizations that presented themselves were enlightening.

The second story, A CHRISTMAS GRACE, was a little harder to get into, but I'm glad I finished it. I've read a few other mysteries with a similar premise, and because I live in an area that is not small, and in today's society it is harder to be knowledgeable about the histories of neighbors who move from place to place with more regularity; it is more difficult to connect with the feelings that were represented in the story. What I wondered after finishing the book is if the questions that Emily had about her own marriage were answered in another book. If they have been, or will be, I'd purchase that book, too.

If yoy have not had the gift of Anne Perry in your life, then your reading vocabulary is sorely missing
a happy dance. She puts into Victoriana and the times as not other author is capable of doing...her
command of the english language is over the moon fantastic. She puts you in the moment, laced into
your corset and ready for a great read. READ HER!!!!!

Anne Perry is one of my favorite authors. Especially her 5 book series on World War I. I keep hoping she will do a sequel series on World War II, but so far, still hoping. The most rewarding thing about reading the Christmas stories is Anne's capacity to write about the promise of redemption and redeeming love that we can all experience if only we are open to it.
