From the Back Cover

When the legendary Briar King awoke from his slumber, a season of darkness and horror fell upon the Kingdom of Crotheny. Now countless breeds of unspeakable monsters roam the countryside. An epidemic of madness has transformed peaceful villagers from the wildlands into savage, flesh-eating fiends. In Eslen, King William has been murdered, Queen Muriele is stalked by treachery on every side, and their last surviving daughter, Anne, has fled the assassins bent on destroying her family.
Close on the heels of the runaway princess, young knight Neil MeqVren, the queen's one trusted ally, is sworn to rescue Anne from her murderous pursuers. Anne herself undertakes a perilous journey toward the sanctuary of her distant paramour's arms, but along the way lie the sinister agents and hidden snares of a sprawling conspiracy that few might hope to evade.
At the same time, spies in the service of Praifec Hespero, the powerful Churchman, embark upon a mission to destroy the Briar King in the heart of his domain. And the power-hungry Church, spurred on by the mystical events, has launched an inquisition whose repercussions threaten even the queen. As the noose of intrigue tightens across the land, personal fates and a kingdom's destiny alike will be decided in a conflict between virtue and malevolence, might and magic.
Here then is Book II of The Kingdoms of Thorn and Bone: intoxicating and harrowing, passionate and grand-it is Greg Keyes's most ambitiously imagined and vividly rendered work of epic fantasy.

Greg Keyes was born in Meridian Mississippi on April 11th, 1963. His mother read to him early and often, until he learned to read. After that he read a lot, between exploring the forests of his native state and the red-rock cliffs of the Navajo Nation where his father worked for a time, Greg took advantage of public libraries and bookmobiles to keep himself entertained, reading science fiction and fact, folktales, and mythology. To his delight, he discovered that writing books was actually a job, and so he decided he should do that. He began to write tales of dinosaurs, spaceships, and fantastic inventions. He listened to the oral traditions of his family, to the stories told in the Navajo Nation -- and more than ever, to read and adventure in the physical world around him. He went to college, earned degrees in anthropology, worked as an archaeologist, travelled, played strange, violent games, learned to play music, worked as a night guard, ironed newspapers, associated with interesting people. In 1996 he managed to get the job he had been working toward when his first novel, THE WATERBORN, was published.

Since that time Greg has published over thirty books, including the original series CHILDREN OF THE CHANGELING, THE AGE OF UNREASON, and THE KINGDOMS OF THORN AND BONE, as well as the stand-alone books THE HOUNDS OF ASH and FOOTSTEPS IN THE SKY He has also had the great fortune to be asked to contribute to other universes, writing books for BABYLON 5, STAR WARS, PLANET OF THE APES, PACIFIC RIM, THE ELDER SCROLLS, XCOM, INDEPENDENCE DAY and Marvel's AVENGERS, and to novelize the films INTERSTELLAR, GODZILLA KING OF THE MONSTERS and GODZILLA vs KONG. He recently scripted her first graphic novel, GODZILLA Vs. KONG: DOMINION He is currently finishing the third book in his newest trilogy, THE HIGH AND FARAWAY. He lives, writes, fences and cooks in Savannah, Georgia with his wife Nell, son John (formerly known as Archer), daughter Lilith (formerly known as Nellah), and a small pack of dogs.

While the cliff-hanger chapter endings seem almost predictable ("It's getting exciting, so it must be close to the end of the chapter), the characters' stories are compelling and draw the reader ever onward. Characters grow along with their challenges, and when their relationships change, it feels right.
The fight scenes and action sequences are vivid. The tension continues to build.

Although the dramatic ending of this book includes many characters together, which is satisfying, there are still enough loose ends to make me curious as to how things will turn out in the next installment. I will continue to read this series.

As with the previous books, the quality of the writing is excellent.

Simply put, this is a great read. Fun, fast-paced and tense, but fails to grip you like the Briar King did. This wasn't all that surprising to me, considering it is the second is a four part series(you almost expect the middle books to sag compared to the beginning and end books).

Aspar and the rest of the characters you loved or hated in the first book make a return and retain their characteristics. Keyes also adds a few new minor and major characters that came as a welcomed addition to his already impressive group.

If you liked the Briar King, you will definitely enjoy this book. But don't expect anything more.

Having said that, I am eagerly awaiting the next book. Great stuff.

There have been a lot of reviews of this book, and so I do not feel the need to explain the book in great detail. I will say that if you like fantasy book, then you need to read this series. This sequel continues right were the first book ended, and it is a really great ride.

There is one point I would like to make that will be counter to some of the lower rated reviews this book received. In this day and age it is generally understood that using traditional formulas and character types should be avoided. Keyes does not. He has a state church, and it is quickly obvious that it is the source of much of the evil in the books. Keyes has characters like the honorable knight, the inept king, and the teen princess who whines too much. Yet Keyes writes his characters with such skill that this isn't even something to be forgiven, it makes the books more entertaining.

I would honestly like to thank the author for reminding me that there is still a place for the honorable knight in modern fantasy novels.

After reading this book, I look at the first book to this series as a prologue of sorts. Things really picked up and took me on an adventure with this one. I loved every chapter and didn't want to put it down. I'm excited to read the next one, as this one was not at all what I was expecting.

While this book wasn't as good as the Briar King, I still really enjoyed it and actually read it faster than I did the Briar King. Like everyone else said, this book mainly served to move the plot along and move the characters towards Eslen, but there were parts where I had aha moments and felt like I understood more than I previously had. I just am glad that I am reading these books years after they were completed so I don't have to wait for the next ones. The end of this book had a particularly heartbreaking and evil cliffhanger ending for one of the characters and I am very anxious to see what happens.

My apologies for making this short - it is less a review and more just a rating. I am really enjoying this author and this series. This second book had excellent pacing and a good mix of suspense and resolution. Enough mystery remains to be enticing while enough things are being explained that you don't feel utterly in the dark. Looking forward to the next two books.

The book I bought from Marchant Electronics was advertised as "NEW", which was an outright lie. You can see from the pictures that the cover is well worn in addition to being smashed in shipping because it was poorly packaged, and almost every page is covered in stains and age spots. Very poor quality. I won't be buying from this seller again.

4.0 out of 5 stars Spannende und gut konstruierte Fantasy
Reviewed in Germany on July 24, 2010
