Dutch republicanism represents a crucially important context within which to discuss Spinoza's political theory and his conception of politics. Spinoza and Republicanism provides an important account of his key political concepts, as well as a fresh and stimulating perspective on the links between Spinoza's two political works and contemporaneous debate and traditions. By identifying the distinctiveness of Dutch republicanism and Spinoza's contribution to it, Raia Prokhovnik also throws new light on recent discussions of republicanism and its history.

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on July 23, 2014
This is a very strong book on Spinoza in the Dutch political context, including a review of the history of the Dutch revolt (roughly from the Burgundians to 1680, as well as an epilogue into the 18th century); a discussion of the political works of de Witt and the de la Court brothers; and specific discussions of Spinoza's connections to Hobbes, etc....It is also a contribution to diversifying the discussion of what constitutes "classic republicanism", a theme that has been developing over the past few years by Pettit, Skinner, and others. The only problem with the book is that it is long, and reads very much like a thesis, with a great deal of repetition and signposts towards later chapters, etc.
