Reading the classics isn't easy. Students often balk at the difficult syntax, unfamiliar settings, and descriptive passages. Length alone keeps some books out of the curriculum. For a teacher to persistsometimes coaxing, sometimes drivingrequires an act of will. In Classics in the Classroom Carol Jago provides practical ideas for making these challenging texts come alive for contemporary students.

Continuing in the tradition of her popular book With Rigor for All, Jago argues that all students, not just those enrolled in honors classes, deserve to read great literature. To make this happen requires artfully crafted lessons that address specific textual challenges. In Classics in the Classroom Jago shares her lesson plans and materials for teaching:

  • vocabulary
  • character study
  • story grammar
  • literary elements
  • metaphorical thinking
Jago also offers practical wisdom for helping all students learn and enjoy great literature. Simply assigning books is not enough. Teachers need an instructional plan that makes difficult texts accessible.

I think this is a wonderful book for anyone who teaches or aspires to teach English. I first encountered the book in a college course "Classics Reconsidered" and reread it again before teaching my own class (Loved it both times). Jago provides an insightful perspective on teaching literature in the classroom. I also like her lists in the Appendix recommending books for the different grade levels. This was very helpful to me when trying to plan different units, since I didn't have any experience teaching the different grade levels yet. If you're looking for a quick read to get fresh ideas for teaching literature than this is an excellent book.

Good book. Especially helpful to secondary teachers, possibly even to professors of first year required literature classes at college. It had some adaptable ideas for intermediate elementary teachers. I doubt it would help primary teachers at all.

I love Carol Jago's ideas, but I can't help but think that she'd produce a better product if she published less often. These short books provide a few interesting insights, a lot that I've seen before, and then are over before they've barely begun. I was hoping from a lot more from this one, but it turns out that by reading the "look inside" section on Amazon, I'd pretty much seen most of it before it even arrived in the mail.

As a classroom teacher of all levels (honors, gifted, and Advanced Placement Language and Literature courses during the past thirty three years, I feel this book was a disappointment. Its title belies its contents. There was nothing new and inspirational for students that do not at least introduce an innovative new concept. I have been ordering from Amazon and keeping abreast with classroom texts for more than twenty years. I wasted my funds on this one.
