If you are taking a research class you can also go online to the Evolve website and take practice exams for each chapter which is great to check if you really have learned the material.
The textbook reads much like the principle author speaks.
There are some inconsistencies due to the order of sections that may cause some confusion. A lot of the content is repeated and re-elaborated which may also cause confusion. Anyone with a high school education and a decent vocabulary will comprehend the words fine; a science and/or math background helps. The multiplication of words is somewhat irritating; I could write the book much shorter and my notes for each chapter was at max 7 pages.
If this is a required textbook for you, I would not recommend reading it completely because it takes up a lot of time for things you may already know. I stopped completely reading after a few chapters and only read small sections I didn't know well, and I still got my A grade. Certainly not worth the money for me (~$35-45 would have been a more appropriate price, in my opinion) who doesn't plan on going into research.
If research is going to be a decent chunck of your life, then this foundation/reference is something you will want to keep.
