J. Frank Dobie was a dedicated historian, teacher, and researcher of tales from Texas, other states, and Mexico. He relates old tales from days gone by, and retells, stories of old. He tells these stories, in such a way, that you, almost, believe that you could go right out and find these treasures. My biggest enjoyment, from his books, is getting a truer image of how the "old west" really was. Most of his books were published in the 1920's after having ridden/driven countless miles to interview the few remaining "old timers" all over the country, along with countless library research of the west. If you want to learn about how the west was then read any of his books! His best and most popular is surely to be Coronado's Children. Other of his books deal will how many ledgends and tales got their beginning. His Forewords in his books will tell you much about this man!

Dobie's southwestern folklore can be read and re-read with no slackening of interest. This particular edition, Bantam Book "Complete and Unabridged" was the 1st Bantam Printing, 1951. The cover illustration of a native Indian in the act of ambushing a cowboy prospecting for gold is true to the 1950's culture. The background: small stream, bare mountains and brushy greenery is authentic to western Texas as well as parts of New Mexico and Arizona. The cover alone is worth the purchase price.

Details from folk tales about how the largest chunks of silver had to be cut up to be packed on mules to transport out can only come from folklore. The characters that Dobie gives us are people you might not wish to meet in person but reading about the custom of sleeping in hammocks: "God is good. He gives us the night to sleep in and the day to rest." an Indian protecting the treasure for "Montezuma" and life in the Sierra Madres must be read to be believed actually reveled in. It doesn't get any better than Dobie for America's southwestern culture. Anne Stewart

I have always been a J. Frank Dobie reader and I can't thank you enough for the quick delivery. The hardback book is in great condition and can't wait to read the many treasure stories.
Respectfully,

Dobie is right on target with all of his stories. Like most other authors of historic fiction on the subject of lost treasure and gold mines, Dobie just doesn't have the ability to solve the mystery of where the treasure is or how to get there. He does spin a good yarn but with more research he could have been more correct on the 'where' .

Not a thrilling story for me in what could be a page-turner subject.

If you enjoy a good story, if you admire cowboy culture, if you still believe in adventure and treasure this is a great book for you. I love all of this man's books. They are authentic, humorous, and deeply cherished.
