When it comes to being a good leader, we've read the sports analogies, we've read the war analogies. But how about hitting a little closer to home?

As a mother, the following rules and tactics probably sound familiar to you:
- Never Underestimate the Power of Kiss-It-Make-It-Better
- Hold the Line on Tantrums
- Remember the Magic Word Count to Three Before Giving a Time-Out

These are good, solid rules for how to raise children. But can these same rules make you a better boss? Absolutely.

In her impressive first book, Shari Storm takes the lessons attributed to parenting and shows how they can be directly applied in the workplace, making you a more effective manager and giving you the confidence to lead and shape your staff into the employees you want them to be. Shari gathers a wonderful collection of funny and inspirational stories from a wide range of executive mothers---TV producers, firefighters, accountants, teachers, baristas, corporate leaders, pilots---for an engaging, easy-to-absorb read.

These pages will provide both laughs and enlightenment. For the woman who wants to excel in her business, this goes beyond your average management book.

I grew up in sunny Kennewick, Washington and now call Seattle my home.

I have a couple of degrees and many years of managing people under my belt.

A few years ago I had my first child, then my second, and recently my third.

Once I had children, I realized what a powerful management training program parenthood can be.

I decided to write a book about this phenomenon to help other women understand how motherhood is an asset to our careers. I signed with Thomas Dunne, a division of St. Martin's Press. Motherhood is the New MBA: Using Your Parenting Skills to Be a Better Boss released nationwide on September 29th, 2009. It has since been contracted in Brazil and China.

I am active and well-versed in social media. In addition to my own blog, I contribute online to Working Mother Magazine, MomLogic and my company’s blog. I’ve also been a guest contributor on a variety of other sites.

I speak on management and social media.

I do belive that my motherhood changed me as a boss. In fact, I think that the motherhood give me a better understanding of who I'm and what can I offer. I loved this book, the histories and the ways how another mother sees the professional-world. I shared myself these visions and it was funny to read different histories in which both we can compare our own kids with our kids at work...

This book gives fantastic insights for both managers and non-managers. Quite simply, a lot of us act like little children in the workplace to get what we want. This book helped me to recognize some of the behaviors that both I and my co-workers do that we clearly learned early on in life. Shari's book is funny, informative and has very simple and easy to utilize takeaways for anyone who wants to improve their interactions in the workplace.

Looks like the Mommy Brigade wants to use their mommy skills in business. I really don't think underlings will appreciate having to take time out. This book is the type of thing that will make it harder for real businesswomen to be taken seriously. Anyone can birth a kiddie but not anyone can get an MBA. Affirmative action gone insane.

"Motherhood is the new MBA" is relevant and logical. The book is an easy read, and it captures precisely why women (not all women) have a unique understanding of how to manage people. The work force landscape has changed and people, particularly younger people, do not respond well with being told what to do and how to do it, without context and a sense of participation. The days of being the boss and being bossy are so over and now people want to be lead. This book does not teach you how to 'mother' your employees, but it does let you know that nuturing them is a productive exercise for you and your team. The results will speak for themselves. I highly recommend this book. Shari Storm has done a great job. Don't assume this book is fluff because it has a cute title...there is real substance in the text and many a manager would do well to read it.

Very well written and thought out. Loved the stories that she used to make her points, at home and at work. I've said for years that females are the superior species, and this book certainly provides ammunition for my point of view. This is a just right balance of stories and facts to make the points very clear.

Well worth reading !

First and foremost, yes it was written for women but men need to read it too. I went to an event where Shari Storm was speaking and knew I had to buy this book. I did! And I finished it the first time two days later, then reread it. It is the best book on management I have ever read! It was real!

I have suggested it to dozens of people and have loaned my copy out half a dozen times. It is worth the read and reread.

MOTHERHOOD IS THE NEW MBA is tons more interesting and fun to read than most other "management" books.

Shari Storm is a wonderful storyteller. She tells family anecdotes that will make you smile and then relates them to real worklife situations. This is top level business school stuff but expressed so gracefully and accessibly that it's a pleasure to read. I generally have to force myself to plow through business books, but this one went down like ice cream. Smart, healthy, good-for-you-but-still-yummy ice cream.

Storm details 26 true-to-life techniques ("Rip the Band-Aid Off Fast," "Never Say 'I Told You So'") every parent uses and then, like magic, shows how these same techniques can be applied to the workplace. She doesn't draw on just her own experience, which is considerable, but quotes many other notable businesswomen as well. Especially nice are the "take-aways" she provides at the end of each chapter.

This book would make a great gift for any woman (or man--because, really, these tips can and should be used by everyone) who manages people.

A final note: No, she's not saying you should treat your employees like two-year-olds (even when they act like them). What she is tapping into here are deep truths about human nature and human experience. Really a wonderful book.

I am not a parent and I never will be so I was skeptical about the title of the book but after hearing Shari speak, I knew I had to read it. The examples that Shari used were so realistic that it helped me understand the parents on my team better. Since I am not a parent, I am not aware of the daily challenges involved in parenting. This book made me aware of the obstacles in their day and the way that they manage their children and their homes. Shari does a GREAT job of finding the "teachable moment" in each parenting scenario and seamlessly applies it to the work-world. The crossroad of parenting and managing is an interesting one and Shari delivers content with humor. A must read for every manager!
