Jane Stokes teaches and researches on film, television and the media. She is interested in how we know what we know. Her publications reflect twin interests: in research methodology and the machinations of the media.

"How we know anything about anything?" -- This is a key theme in How to Do Media and Cultural Studies -- a standard text book for students writing a dissertation or conducting their first piece of major research at University level. In 2021 the third edition of the best selling text book was published by Sage Publications.

On Screen Rivals is about how films construct a particular idea of television - and how the material reality of the relationship between film and television inflects the work produced. It asks: What is the idea of television? How has this changed through the years? How does the representation of television differ in films in the US and the UK?

Jane is currently working on a play about Nina Simone and is looking forward to writing the fourth edition of How to Do Media and Cultural Studies.

Top review from the United States

Reviewed in the United States on May 1, 2000
This book offers a comprehensive review of the main debates in British media studies and globalization. It covers all areas of publishing, advertising, press (newspaper), broadcasting (television and radio), cinema, music, and new media. The first part of the book concentrates on the media industry; the second section examines the media policy and regulations; the third section incorporates many case studies that involved contemporary debate topics of ownership, globalization, vertical integration, diversity, gender, race, and national identity. A thorough examination of media in Britain! Highly recommended for mass communications students and researchers who want to familiarize themselves with the media in Britain within one book.
