Knopf MapGuide: Vienna Paperback – February 22, 2011

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 11 ratings

This opening fold-out contains a general map of Vienna to help you visualize the 6 large districts discussed in this guide, and 4 pages of valuable information, handy tips and useful addresses.

Discover Vienna through 6 districts and 6 maps

Stephansdom
Freyung/ Hofburg
Ring/ Josefstadt/ Alsergrund
Leopoldstadt/ Prater
Karlsplatz/ Wienzeile/ Belvedere
Schönbrunn/ Hietzing

For each district there is a double-page of addresses (restaurants — listed in ascending order of price — cafés, bars, tearooms, baths, music venues and stores) followed by a fold-out map for the relevant area with the essential places to see (indicated on the map by a star *). These places are by no means all that Vienna has to offer but to us they are unmissable. The grid-referencing system (
A B2) makes it easy for you to pinpoint addresses quickly on the map.

Transportation and hotels in Vienna
The last fold-out consists of a transportation map and 4 pages of practical information that include a selection of hotels.

A thematic index lists all the sites and addresses featured in this guide.

Editorial Reviews

Review

The Washington Post says, “The map guide lets you be inconspicuous: it’s as small and light as a novella, and its flip-out maps could pass as a flyer to a cool club.”

“Make sure you never lose your way in a strange city. Each of the Knopf MapGuides captures its city’s pith in a package as small as a passport wallet…”–
Real Simple

“Knopf MapGuides are handy, practical and perfect for those of us who are slightly impaired when it comes to map-reading. You don’t have to search a huge crackling sheet with a microscopic index for one of 10,000 dots on the map…The extraordinary quality of the books’ beautiful hues and heavy paper also give these $8.95 guides an evocative quality that stands apart from the glossy, garish look of most travel books.” – Marin Independent Journal

“A good, handy portable item for a quick trip” –
San Francisco Chronicle

“We love Knopf’s smart new map guides.” – Travel & Leisure

I loved this guide because:
1. It "divides" the city's places to visit in manageable areas, with clear descriptions. Each area has its own fold-up map -- and the maps are easily folded back into place without becoming a messy blob.
2. The book is light, thin, handy -- DEFINITELY a plus when you have to lug around camera in your travel bag. I hate guides that are bulky and heavy.
3. The highlights are clear. descriptions concise.
4. There is a handy train map at the back.
5. Good quality paper that doesn't not break from being wet. Heaven knows that was handy given that 5 of the 6 days we were in Vienna (just last week) was RAINY.

I used this on many occasions in Vienna recently and was very satisfied with its accuracy, legibility and comprehensiveness. It was much easier and rewarding to use than the Eyewitness Travel and Borch maps, and was much more complete in its labeling of streets.

For someone who hates walking around in a new city carrying cumbersome folding maps, Knopf MapGuide is just the ticket. Map sections are easy to read. I wish though the designers could have found room for separate maps for metro, buses, and trams.

I purchase a Knopf Mapguide for every city I visit. I find them not only helpful in navigating our way but also it points out all places of interest including cafes and restaurants.

The good: The restaurant selections by neighborhood are very helpful. While the bigger guidebooks provide more options and a more in depth description, their "neighboorhood" designations could end up being miles wide, while the Knopf guides neighborhoods are much smaller. So, if you find a restaurant in your current "map" its only a few minutes walk, tops.

The bad: I found the Vienna guide a lot harder to use than some of the other Knopf map guides. I do not know if this was due to the nature of Vienna's street layout or what, but I definitely found myself more turned around than usual. Also, it would be helpful if the guide gave you more realistic shopping suggestions. Sorry, but while in Vienna, I'm not looking to buy exotic plants.

This series of city gudes are wonderful for any traveler. They are handy and small enough to fit in a pocket. They provide useful information at a glance.

I have used such editions in Rome, Florence, Prague, Stockholm and Paris and have never found them lacking other than for the fact that I could not get one for Copenhagen.
