The Principalship allows readers to gain a broader, more complex and accurate understanding of school administrator leadership in today’s learning communities while presenting an expansive view of leadership within schools not limited to the responsibilities of the principal, but including those of assistant principals, administrators, teachers, and students. This innovative first edition text presents a complete picture of the principal as school administrator, community builder, advocate, manager, mentor, supervisor, politician, leader and learner.

The Principalship covers the importance of learning: the learning of principals, the learning of other professionals, and especially the learning of students. School improvement is not possible without this across-the-board learning and exploration, and this text places a strong emphasis on this simple but often-overlooked aspect of school communities.

Today’s school systems are faced with a number of fresh challenges: changing student populations, rapidly expanding research knowledge, increasing accountability requirements, federal and state policy demands, and escalating expectations for school services. This book will help aspiring school leaders to bridge the gap between traditional conceptualizations of the principal and more innovative, functional, and multifaceted conceptualizations that respond to the changing conditions and higher demands of contemporary learning communities.

I enjoyed the organization of the book. The way each chapter opened with a vignette is a powerful tool to get the reader in the context of the information in the chapter. The book has made me reflect greatly about the role of the principal and the challenges the role requires. This book will be one that stays in my library for years to come. If it is required reading for a class, you’ll find that you’ll keep it no matter the high price – it is well worth it.

Perfect intro for the soon to be administrator. The vignettes and associated text are remarkable. The book is up to date and addresses current issues for the 21st century school environment. A mandatory text for my Introduction to Administration class for masters in education study

I really like how well this book reads. It isn't your usual blah blah blah academic book where you have to have a dictionary for it to make sense. I am engaged throughout my readings which is a huge bonus for someone with attention issues.

Beneficial. It's a textbook, so it is what it is. Overpriced, for certain, but it does have some valuable information in it. I wish it had wrapped up the vignettes and had some closure.

This book is a "must" for anyone who wants to learn more about the evolving role of a principal and the restructuring of a schools using a Professional Learning Community model.

This book is very thorough on how to become a principal in the 21st century and how to develop a professional learning community in a school-based system.

The first time I opened the book, the glue binding began coming loose a few at a time. After I'd ready about half the textbook, the pages began falling out. The Amazon.com representative suggested that I use book binding tape to try to fix it. There are so many pages falling out, that it is really unusable. Since I rented this textbook, it is very disappointing that it is in this condition. I will never rent a textbook from this vendor again.
