Exploring Ethics: An Introductory Anthology is a remarkably accessible, concise, and engaging introduction to moral philosophy. Steven M. Cahn brings together a rich, balanced, and wide-ranging collection of forty classic and contemporary readings. Most importantly, he has carefully edited the articles so that they will be exceptionally clear and understandable to undergraduate students. The selections are organized into three parts, providing instructors with flexibility in designing and teaching a variety of ethics courses. The first part, Challenges to Morality, considers the overly simple assumptions that beginning students may bring to moral issues. The second part, Moral Theories, provides selections from the most influential ethical theories of the past along with commentary by contemporary thinkers. The third part, Moral Problems, offers opposing perspectives on nine controversial issues: abortion, euthanasia, world hunger, terrorism, pornography, affirmative action, animal rights, the environment, and capital punishment.
Exploring Ethics features selections from Plato, Aristotle, Hobbes, Kant, Mill, Nietzsche, Thomas Nagel, James Rachels, John Rawls, Tom Regan, Peter Singer, Susan Wolf, and many others. Each reading is preceded by a detailed introduction and followed by study questions that encourage students to think philosophically. Ideal for courses in introduction to ethics or contemporary moral problems, this unique anthology can be used independently or as a companion to a single-authored text. An Instructor's Manual and Companion Website accompany the text. The instructor's materials include a testbank, key terms with definitions, reading summaries, and PowerPoint lectures.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"An excellent and rich overview of major theories and debates in metaethics, normative ethics, and applied ethics. The table of contents includes several of the most important figures in the history of western moral philosophy (Kant, Mill, Aristotle), but also combines those readings with contemporary secondary literature, making the classics more accessible."--Kristen Intemann, Montana State University

"The quality of the selections in this anthology is uniformly very high and well suited for classroom discussion."--Heimir Geirsson, Iowa State University

"These readings provide an excellent introduction to the core issues in Western ethical thought."--Manyul Im, California State University, Los Angeles

Received on time for the semester to start and in good condition. Ended up dropping the class and returning. Process to turn was incredibly easy.

This is a great book! It expands your knowledge on different views about various topics. I had to buy it for a class, but am so glad I did! You don't have to agree with everything that philosopher's write, but it's really cool to see their views (and reasons behind those views).

Ethics can be very dry reading, but the way this book is organized helped me understand theories from centuries past. Some chapters seem wordy and confusing, but the next chapter usually would help explain the previous more in depth. I love that multiple views of a subject are side by side making it convenient to compare those chapters, and reach one's own differing view point. I recommend using the fantastic online study help provided with this book because it also helped me ace my exams. I found the intro summaries for each chapter helpful by summing up what the reading should convey. However, I wish the questions located at the chapters conclusion were answered, and explained.

Great condition. Would not have purchased if I didn't need for a class, but it serves its purpose well. Aside from it being a little tedious, it's very interesting. One 178 word sentence had me quite confused, but I'm told most old philosophers wrote that way.

The product arrived a day earlier, so shipping was great. Item was just as described, and I was very happy with the price paid. Good value. Satisfied with my purchase.

I love this book. I think it is great and full of tons of information that anyone interested in ethics will like. Yes, some of this book is dry and a bit tough to understand but for the most part the information is readable and well worth it!

Page after page after page of old white blow hards blowing hard. It's a big wank festival.I got this for an English 1A class and while there are some nice pieces like MLK's Letter From Birmingham Jail the book is really filled with antiquated and outrageous (some totally racist) texts.

Got this book in decent time. It was a lot cheaper than all other alternatives by atleast $15. The book was in great condition. It seemed like a completely new book except there were certain things highlighted in some of the chapters (which I didn't mind). Also, this was the 2009 edition when I required the 2011 edition. Not much difference though, content remained the same.
