Human Behavior and the Social Environment: Macro Level: Groups, Communities, and Organizations 1st Edition

4.6 4.6 out of 5 stars 84 ratings

There is a newer edition of this item:

Each person is a unique individual, yet we all are also defined by groups - those we belong to and those we are excluded from, voluntarily or involuntarily. In the second half of the Human Behavior and the Social Environment sequence, Katherine van Wormer, Fred Besthorn, and Thomas Keefe take a stimulating new approach to exploring this macro view of humanity and demonstrating how each component of society, from the single person to the sprawling organization, is part of a dynamic whole. Their collaboration has produced a remarkable volume that will help students recognize and consider interactions between and among individuals and social systems, and thereby develop into truly effective social workers.

*Outlines theoretical concepts and practice implications in each chapter *Highlights the importance of the natural environment and ecology - the "community of the earth" - to human and group behavior *Sets forth a refined understanding of the role of spirituality - the "community of faith" - in people's lives *Focuses on evidence-based theory and research *Teaches from a global, cross-cultural perspective, highlighting themes of empowerment and social justice *Features dynamic readings and personal narratives that highlight each chapter's topic *Accompanied by an online instructor's manual with Power Points for lecture presentations, chapter summaries, key terms, suggested classroom activities, and a test bank with essay and multiple choice questions

Also available is a companion volume,
Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Micro Level, which offers an eye-opening view of how biological, psychological, and cultural forces influence individuals' behavior.

Editorial Reviews

Review

"Together, the two books by van Wormer and van Wormer, Besthorn and Keefe on Human Behavior and the Social Environment give a comprehensive overview of human behavior in the wider social context. They provide increased awareness of the connections between individual behavior, circumstances, cultural and global influences as well as ethical considerations that must form a part of personal and professional decision-making. Although these books sit well together, each one can also stand competently alone."--International Social Work

Book Description

A remarkable volume that will help students recognize and consider interactions between and among individuals and social systems.

This work by Katherine van Wormer, F. Besthorn and T. Keefe is one of many other excellent works, where Dr. van Wormer has published alone or with others. Its scholarship is strong, yet, unabashedly acknowledges the level of "the heart," in this sense, the importance of spirituality and ethics in the eradication of individual and social pathology, which the authors cogently argue are mutually related. Infused also, is a fine attunement to literature, revealing once again the importance of a knowledge base grounded in the liberal arts for adequate interventions in the helping and health professions. Filled with numerous examples and sensitive to a spectrum of controversial issues, this book can also serve as excellent grist for individual and collective reflection, discussion, and socially just actions.

One of the best written books in the field! Taken as a whole, Human Behavior and the Social Environment, Macro Level offers a stimulating and thought-provoking approach to the study of human nature. The content presented is informed by up-to-date, evidence-based documentation from the biological and social sciences throughout. This text can be used as a single textbook for the second course of human behavior and the social environment or together with the companion volume, HBSE, Micro Level. Extensive online instructors' manuals and detailed Power Points for lecture presentations are provided for both books upon request.
