Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

"Buddhism offers a gentle... understanding of being stuck and getting unstuck," writes Kasl (If the Buddha Dated), referring to a variety of stubborn problems that can interfere with life, including feeling intractably "bored, scared, protective, petty, exhausted, afraid or unfulfilled." In 60-plus brief chapters featuring discussions and therapy-type strategies deeply rooted in Buddhist teachings, Kasl guides readers on a journey of self-discovery. She begins by inviting them to notice where they are stuck, and then asks them to simply "show up" to life with a sense of "fascination and curiosity." She implores them to be mindful and to trust in the power of engaging reality directly without interpretive lenses (acknowledging difficulties in a relationship, for example, instead of making excuses). She then explores the importance of connecting with others, of acting on insights and the "ultimate step" of letting go the temporal self, an act that brings "abiding happiness." Throughout, she intersperses exercises to help readers engage the lessons more personally. Kasl's approach is compelling: her discussions are simple but never simplistic; her tone is warmly inviting but not obsequious; and her insights are both penetrating and accessible. Occasionally her supporting illustrations veer into the cheesy, but overall Kasl offers a challenging, practical and disarmingly effective approach to getting out of life's ruts.

She is a Certified Addiction Specialist in the areas of chemical dependency and sexuality and has had a private psychotherapy practice for more than 30 years. She is the author of nine books and numerous articles.

Dr. Kasl has conducted a wide variety of workshops on relationships, addiction, sexuality, spirituality, community, healing from incest and abuse, casting out internalized oppression, preventing burn out, quantum healing, empowerment, and finding joy, both in the United States and abroad. Her groundbreaking book Many Roads, One Journey: Moving Beyond the 12 Steps, published in 1992, introduced a 16-step empowerment approach for overcoming addiction that focuses on finding one's voice, building confidence, taking action on one's behalf, and understanding addiction in a cultural context. It has been used throughout the United States and Canada, as well as Europe, to assist in overcoming trauma, addiction, and depression.

In 1987, she was part of a task force funded by the Department of Human Services in Minnesota to create a model treatment program for chemically dependent women. She was on the advisory board of The Women's Recovery Network, The Women's Action Alliance for Alcohol and Drug Education, and invited twice by the National Center for Substance Abuse Prevention to participate in a synthesis conference to make recommendations on the needs of women. She has consulted with numerous treatment programs and served on several advisory boards, such as The Organization for Secular Sobriety, known as Save OurSelves (SOS).

Dr. Kasl is also a founding member of ATTACH, The Association for the Teaching and Training in the Attachment of Children. In 1997, she received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Council on Sexual Addiction and Compulsivity, (now knows as SASH Society for the Advancement of Sexual Health) for her work with women and sexuality. In 2000, If the Buddha Dated was one of five finalists for the National Books for Better Living Awards. In addition, she was listed in Self magazine as one of 50 "sage" psychologists in the United States.

In her psychotherapy therapy practice, Dr. Kasl takes an empowering approach by helping people address the core issues underlying depression, anxiety, addictions, and relationship difficulties. She works with numerous therapeutic approaches, such as ego state therapy, hypnosis, quantum psychology, EMDR, cognitive therapy, and emotionally focused therapy for couples. She is also an avid hiker, pianist, and has been a Reiki Master Healer since 1983.

This product is excellent. Not only did the seller send me a MINT item, it is a superb book, with excellent references, and wonderful way of speaking in a manner which is not intimidating. It is easy to understand, reads very easily, and can be read in a short time. If you'd like a quick introduction to helping yourself through life in a manner which the Buddha himself would have approved this is the book for you. It should help you become unstuck in your issues, becoming happier. Becoming mindful and discovering just what that is, is a key issue in the book...and it might not be what you think if you have never been exposed to it. I must say that reading this book will not make you change your religion. It will only help you become more relaxed, more focused, and, well, happier. Because, contrary to popular belief, Buddhism is NOT a religion. It is a learning experience, and a way of being. A way of seeing, a way of living. Try this book.

Change is not a joy for most people. It doesn't happen fast, it's something that requires time, patience and effort. Three strikes against facing change right there. This book tackles change from the Buddhist perspective. You don't have to know a thing about Buddhism or be religious to benefit from the book.

The book goes right to the heart of what makes change hard--we benefit in some way from the way we are doing things now. That's where it starts. The chapters are short, there are tips and exercises for each step along the way.

You can just read and move on, or you can do the exercises and discover you have a lot more strength and energy than you thought you did.

The book is broken into steps--Notice Where You Are Stuck, Show Up, Pay Attention, Live in Reality, Connect With Others, Move from Thought to Action, Let Go. Exercises all along the way make you feel like you are doing something for yourself. Because you are.

I've read if the Buddha dated and married and adore them both. I picked up this one out of curiosity not necessarily because I felt stuck. It is a great recap for Buddhist living. And great if you do feel stuck in life somewhere!
It's a good read for Buddhist or not alike, especially if you feel bogged down by ( fill in the blank)...
I gave it 4 stars only because I'm a stingy rater; 5 is hard to earn. 4 is awesome, 3 is average, 2 is meh, and 1 is dismal.
Enjoy.

I first found this book when I was 19, now almost 33. It changed my whole perspective on like and allowed me to find inner peace and flow. I always come back to this book when I need help remembering that I am only in control of my own actions and thoughts. I highly recommend this book, if you feel like you aren't doing what your meant to do or if you are trying to make hard decisions in life. I'm currently rereading because I'm human and get caught up in life and need to refocus.

The author has created a readable little book full of nuggets of wisdom which are easily understood and applied to one's personal circumstances. Everyday examples are provided of the more theoretical concepts which make application of the ideas seem do-able. A game changer!

5.0 out of 5 stars An Accessible Buddhism-tinted Empowering Book

I am mid-way through this wonderfully frank and gentle book, and I already feel compelled to spread the word. It's an encouraging and realistic approach to improving your situation, whatever your situation is, whilst remaining grounded in 'what is'. Mindfulness, Action, Conditioning, Perception.....all sorts of subjects are touched on...a myriad of helpful advise and exercises which can only benefit each and every reader.
I give it 5 stars for it's positive and honest approach, and it's reminding us; it comes down to US to put the gentle, compassionate effort in to heal and thrive and live fully. Be gentle with yourselves.
Thank you.
