The secrets of the Hopi "road of life" revealed for the first time in written form

In this strange and wonderful book, thirty elders of the ancient Hopi tribe of Northern Arizona—a people who regard themselves as the first inhabitants of America—freely reveal the Hopi worldview for the first time in written form. The Hopi kept this view a secret for countless centuries, and anthropologists have long struggled to understand it. Now they record their myths and legends, and the meaning of their religious rituals and ceremonies as a gift to future generations. Here is a reassertion of a rhythm of life we have disastrously tried to ignore and instincts we have tragically repressed, and a reminder that we must attune ourselves to the need for inner change if we are to avert a cataclysmic rupture between our minds and hearts.

I am reading this book now. It is simply amazing. It is a spiritual journey unto itself. The book is written in such a way that you feel like you have experienced the birth and death of the first three worlds. The print in the book is extremely small though so it makes it tough to read a lot at once. If you use reading glasses your probably going to have a hard time with it. I have the small paperback version. I don't know if larger print versions exist. You can probably download it for kindle though. Even suffering through the small print, what is being presented here is priceless and well worth the effort.

If you are interested in Native American culture, specifically the Hopi, then this book will teach many of their beliefs and traditions. Frank Waters is part Hopi so I trust his insights.

Very well written book that will require time to read. I find it helpful to have a pencil and notebook handy as I read the book because it has a lot of detailed information. This book has wonderful black and white drawings as well as photographs. This book was highly recommended to me. The print is a bit smaller than usual, but not difficult to read in good light or with a good reading lamp. I have learned so much from this book.

I once had the great opportunity to interview Frank Waters in his home. Wise beyond his many years at the time, it was great to converse with a man that was so respected among the clans, both of the HOPI and the Pueblo. The book was based mainly on the word of one HOPI. While the book is well documented, and thorough....you need to read The Fourth World of the HOPIs to color in all of the history. No movies on this...so you have to use your reading imagination to see the great panorama of the history.
Remember, the Kachinas were leading the HOPI around the great lands of the Americas and the SAME time that Moses was leading his tribes. Open your mind to a new world of history.

An incredibly detailed history of the Hopi Indians & their legends from the beginning of time. The book is meant to be read carefully in order to absorb the story told within. Only those with an appreciation of native peoples & their cultures should attenpt to read it, as casual readers might get bored. The last few chapters made me want to cry, as they detailed the incredible abuse suffered by the Hopi from the US Govt. A freaking SHAME!

This is the most detailed, accurate account of the religious life of America's most spiritually powerful Indian tribe. The Hopi's life IS their religion and it is powerful in a way one cannot analyze, only experience. Anyone who has ever had the honor to experience a Hopi ceremonial or sit and listen to the wisdom of Hopi elders knows this. Frank Waters has captured both the fact of their ceremonials and the mystical, metaphysical reality behind it, including the human intrusions back and forth between the real world and that of the spirit. This is the definitive book on the Hopis, both as a people and as a religious order "responsible for the spiritual welfare of the western hemisphere." My thanks to Mr. Waters and to the Hopi people.

5.0 out of 5 stars It is spiritually very uplifting

The vision of the Hopis regarding the spiritual journey of mankind, its raison d'etre closely follows the Vedic dictum - "Charaiveti Charaiveti" ( O traveller, March on, March along"). The migration of the Hopis kept alive his Spiritual link to the Creator. It shows the way that any civilization for it to retain its purpose and vigor must devise means to determine its forward progress only on the will of the Creator, not on the so called egoistic freewill of man. Wherever Man and his Civilization stops its journey to accumulate, Evil enters with the seeds of ultimate destruction. That is how ages progress - the different worlds of the Hopi, the four ages - Satya, Treta, Dwapara and Kali of the Vedic Cosmogony. The book also discusses the role of the seven psycho-spiritual body centres of man - which closely parallels the Yogic and Tantric view of human body containing seven Chakras - Sahasrara, Ajna, Visuddha, Anahata, Manipura, Swadhisthana and Muladhara. Personally, the book has answered many of my spiritual queries.
