For undergraduate courses in Drugs and Behavior Psychopharmacology, as well as graduate survey courses in Psychopharmacology.

This text gives an up-to-date description of the field of Behavioral Pharmacology. It starts by describing basic pharmacological concepts of drug administration and pharmacokinetics, research methodology including clinical trials, tolerance and withdrawal, drug conditioning, addiction processes, and neuroscience of drug action. Each chapter, thereafter, applies these concepts to different classes of both recreational and therapeutic drugs. Each chapter includes a section on the history of the drug class that places the drug in its historical and social context. It is written to be understandable to students without a background in Pharmacology or Neuroscience or Psychology.

I bought this book because it was a required text for a general education psychology course I was taking. Since the course was not a high-level science course, I didn't expect the book to be detailed, or even all that interesting. It surpassed my expectations. It provides in-depth information on the pharmacodynamics and phamacokinetics of many classes of drugs. It's not a traditional psychology text as it also examines drugs through the lens of biology, and also sometimes through lenses of sociology and culture. The "sidebars" were interesting to me, even if the references were somewhat outdated (one sidebar was on the death of Princess Diana). This may be an earlier addition, but the information seemed up-to-date to me.

For less than 30.00 USD, this text, which arrived in good condition, was exactly what I needed for both Drugs & Behaviour - Introduction to Psychopharmacology, and Biopsychology. An absolute steal, considering my University book store was trying to charge +$225.00 for a used copy in abysmal shape. This book is very technical; however, it isn't too bad once you've read it for long enough. If you are used to reading research analysis or academic articles, this should be easy to digest. The information inside is invaluable to those studying biopsychology and psychopharmacology.

I had classes through Neurobiology of Addiction and in 2009 we didn't use either version of the text, but new staff has brought the newer textbook edition into classes. This edition, the international and newer textbook versions aren't bad, but FYI, it's like most addiction texts that include being debunked from purpose of class use. Both authors have been around awhile. There's a few topics that are a little out of the standard trick wording. It's not neurobiology of addiction.

I took a BU course on Drugs and Behaviors, and this was one of two books my professor recommended we get. I found it very helpful. Every time we had a quiz I would read over the material on that chapter in this book. It helped me to fill in the gaps of information I had missed in class and my notes, and also just to help refresh my memory. Sometimes, mainly with the first chapter or two we studied, there was some information I didn't need to know, but once we got into the specific types of drugs- SSRIs, Anti-psychotics, Mood stabilizers- most of the information was helpful. I really recommend this book. It was so helpful to me and I don't know what I would have done without it.

The copy I received which was listed as "good" had been used and abused. However, the information in the text coupled with the writing style redeemed the purchase! I am very lucky the professor had allowed us to use this edition instead of the newer one listed for the course. Very informative, and well organized text book.

Very interesting even with the lack of pictures and color. Kept beyond my assign class

I am using this book to teach an undergrad course on neurochemistry and behavior. Since we are squeezing a semester into 6 weeks, this book (which is fairly concise at just over 400 pages) was good choice. The first 5 chapters are a solid overview of pharmacology, behavior analysis, and the (very) basics of neuroscience. The remainder of the chapters deal with specific drugs (or classes thereof).

However, I don't think I would use it to teach a full-term course. The depth is rather uneven, with some chapters barely skirting the surface of some topics and digressions into experimental minutae in others. Also, the drug chapters fall into a very predictable pattern (history, pharmacokinetics, effects on unconditioned behavior, effects on conditioned behavior, self-administration, etc., etc.) which, though I can appreciate it from an organizational standpoint, became very tedious to teach (and read) after the first few.
