About the authors
Laura Poole was born at the tail end of 1972 on an Air Force base in the US South. A few years later, her family settled in North Carolina, where she grew up, went to school, and ate a lot of pasta. She graduated from the NC School of Science and Mathematics and Duke University. She stuck around North Carolina, but chose to ditch the "get a job" path and be self-employed, which she's done since 1997. Mostly she edits books for university presses and trains other editors, and she's also a trained and certified life coach. She tries her hand at modern quilting in her limited spare time, and enjoys parenting her spitfire daughter. She has a couple of cats, and loves the sound and smell of rain.

I've published 30 books. I edit Extra Innings, an online newsletter for writers, having for 20 years edited a print publication for writers called Creativity Connection. I've published articles and short stories in hundreds of regional and national magazines, and I'm a columnist for The Writer's Magazette, an online magazine for writers. I teach in the Odyssey Project for the University of Wisconsin- Madison.
I hold a BA in creative writing and an MA in communications from Stanford University. I've been married to the former Ellen Malloy since 1968, and we have one son, Jeremiah, who is married to the former Kimberly Zunker. When not writing or teaching, I like to read, exercise, play the piano, draw cartoons, listen to old time radio shows, and talk back to the television (not all at the same time). I'm a passionate baseball fan, drive the back roads (often taking the longest distance between two points, and eat in small town cafes.

This is one of the few books that I have read that explicitly endorses membership in a Toastmasters International club. This is wise advice because Toastmasters is arguably the best professional development bargain on the planet. For less than $60 per year members are coached in public-speaking and leadership skills. What a deal!
Every 10 pages or so, I came across something new and helpful. For example, the author recommends checking with employees before making a decision that affects their work. I've done this - and it works well. But really, you're doing a lot of prospecting through the text to find these gems .
Would I buy this book again? Unlikely. It's more of a library book. Good for a quick skim if you have time, but it's not your leading text in the field. I'd prefer a book like "Crucial Conversations", which explores some of the trickier themes in management.
which covers the essentials of coaching for novices and
even experienced pros. The authors indicate that a coach
must have certain traits like a positive attitude, enthusiasm,
trust, focus, the ability to see the big picture, respect
and empathy for others, curiosity and the ability to be
objective.
In conversation, coaches must be very observant for things
like body language, level of interest and attention to detail
according to the authors. In addition, the presentation
emphasizes the needs of staff. These needs include learning
relevant skills, achieving milestones, reinforcement,
performance measurement, attention and incremental praise.
The authors demonstrate how a coach should perform in action.
Coaches need to develop rapport with the staff, a vision,
the ability to brainstorm, plan formulation, commitment and
followup to ensure that projects are on target.
At bottom, the book teaches that coaches need to structure
work and then allow people to do the job without too much
interference and micro-management. Another important task
is to match workers with tasks commensurate with their skills.
Coaches need to create a supportive environment with adequate
opportunities to learn. Finally, coaches concentrate on the
process for accomplishing tasks without getting buried in
too many details.
Effective Coaching fills in the blanks on many aspects of
coaching that could be missed or overlooked in the unpredictable
dynamic of managing small groups of people under tight time
deadlines. The book is easy to understand and the concepts
are presented in a logical sequence utilizing checklists and
other structured problem solving tools.
