John Reynolds Gardiner's classic action-packed adventure story about a thrilling dogsled race has captivated readers for more than thirty years.

Based on a Rocky Mountain legend, Stone Fox tells the story of Little Willy, who lives with his grandfather in Wyoming. When Grandfather falls ill, he is no longer able to work the farm, which is in danger of foreclosure. Little Willy is determined to win the National Dogsled Race—the prize money would save the farm and his grandfather. But he isn't the only one who desperately wants to win. Willy and his brave dog Searchlight must face off against experienced racers, including a Native American man named Stone Fox, who has never lost a race.

Exciting and heartwarming, this novel has sold millions of copies and was named a New York Times Outstanding Children's Book.

Editorial Reviews

Review

“Gardiner’s description of the race and sudden climax (based on legend) is fast-paced and enveloping.” (School Library Journal)

“A superb piece of storytelling―without doubt the most exciting and moving book this season.” (The New Yorker)

From the Back Cover

A Race Against Time

Little Willy's grandfather is sick, and it's up to Willy to save their farm from tax collectors. Their only hope is the prize money from the National Dogsled Race. But a lot of other people want to win the race, too, including Stone Fox, who has never lost a race in his life.

Do Willy and his dog Searchlight stand a chance against the toughest racers around? Can they win the race to save the farm -- and Grandfather -- before it's too late?

WORST BOOK EVER!!!
1 Star
WORST BOOK EVER!!!
I cannot believe my third grader was assigned this book. This book was written to create anxiety and depression in children. With content like this, it’s no wonder our kids are struggling so much. I’m a full blown adult and this book has me BAWLING. If your child gets assigned this book, please consider reading it first like I did. I will not be letting my daughter read this book and save her the scar that this book will no doubt create.

This book was read to us in the 3rd grade. It brought me back to that time and it’s such a great easy read that made me experience some emotion. Highly recommend.

Definetly a class favorite. It is sad at the end, but it holds students’ attention and opens up great discussions.

I bought this book for my rising 5th grade grandson. We are reading this book together. Even my granddaughters are excited to hear more about this story.

My daughter needed to read this for her Summer reading assignment. Of course, she lost the school provided copy. This one came quick and she's flying through it. Though she often complains that it's a sad book.

I give this book 4 out of 5 stars. I really liked this book, Stone Fox. Little Willy is challenged to take care of himself, his dog Searchlight, and his grandfather who’s sick. A reason why I liked Stone Fox is because each chapter leaves you off at a cliffhanger and you just can’t stop reading. Another reason I liked this book is because of the way Little Willy acts. But the thing I didn’t like about this book is how it ends. Do you think Little Willy will succeed in taking care of himself, Searchlight, and grandfather? After all he’s just a kid.

Book 12 of 2022 — Stone Fox by John Reynolds Gardiner

I have always loved to read. As a child, I would ask for book lists to read during the summer. I volunteered at the library in high school. Anything to get my hands on the words. Stone Fox was one of my favorites. I remember being so angry when one of my own kiddos spoiled the ending for her younger brother!

Pros: As an adult, this book seems very short. I remember reading it as a kid and it took me a while! I enjoy the pictures and the descriptions of the characters. As a child, I certainly didn’t understand Willy’s grandfather’s illness.

Cons: No cons. A beautiful little story that resonates with you long after you’re done! Bring tissues!

I’m glad the library had a square for “Re-read your favorite book from childhood”!

My seventh 5⭐️ of 2022.

My 9 year old son loves dogs and really enjoyed this book. It was assigned as school reading for the third grade, but a second grader could read it too. It has a cliffhanger at the end of each chapter, which keeps the kids reading. The ending is sad. So if you have a sensitive child you may want to discuss the ending with him or her.

It is a story about a little boy who lives with his grandfather on a farm. His grandfather is sick and has debts. The little boy decides to enter a dog race to win enough money to pay his grandfather’s debts. The little boy has to beat the best dog sled musher in the area. I’ll let you read to find out what happens.

5.0 out of 5 stars
