The Phantom Tollbooth CD Audio CD – Unabridged, November 18, 2008

4.4 4.4 out of 5 stars 52 ratings

For Milo, everything's a bore. When a mysterious tollbooth appears in his room, he drives through only because he's got nothing better to do. But on the other side, things seem different. Milo visits the island of Conclusions (you get there by jumping), learns about time from a ticking watchdog named Tock, and goes up against the dastardly Discord and Dynne. By the time Milo and Tock set off toward the Mountains of Ignorance to rescue the twin Princesses, Rhyme and Reason, Milo realizes something astonishing. Life is far from dull. In fact, it's exciting beyond his wildest dreams . . .

Performed by David Hyde Pierce

My older kids have all read the book and my 9-year-old wanted to do a book report on it based on her siblings reviews of it. Unfortunately, she was having trouble sounding out some of the words and it was taking longer than she'd hoped. She had gotten about 2/3 of the way through the book when we got the audio CDs and used them as a read-along. We have several copies of the book, so we all sat down and listened and read along with the book! It was perfect.

The audio CDs are unabridged, so it was word for word with the paperback. The narration was great and she was able to hear the words she had struggled with (she listened to the entire thing just to be sure she understood everything she'd read up to that point). She finished the book with just enough time to write a book report (A-) and take the AR test, on which she got 100%. I'm very satisfied with our purchase.

This story is such fun!

The characters come to life with David Hyde Pierce's narration, portraying each part with the appropriate amount of vigor or subtlety, as needed. There must be 100 different voices and they suit the characters just perfectly.

It's more fun than the book, and the book is excellent. Any fan of puns or wordplay will get a lot of material from this book. Norton Juster's love of learning and teaching is readily apparent, having the hero travel through the kingdom of Wisdom to free Rhyme and Reason from the demons of ignorance. But it's all done in as fun a way as possible, with sympathetic supporting characters and in great settings.

Trust me, this audio book is easily worth several times the listed price.

My five-year old grandson loves this CD. He replays it constantly. I think this will be one of his favorites. He listens to a lot of CD stories during his quiet time and this one has moved to the top of his list. The Seller I bought this through was exceptional and I give the seller 5 stars as well!

Tremendous audio book! The story is amazing. It has so many details that will appeal to adults and the story is engaging for kids. The performance of David Hyde Peirce makes this unforgetable. He brings all the characters to life. I highly reccommend this to any family on a road trip!

I ordered this for Christmas for my daughter and she didn’t open the package for a while after receiving it. When she finally did it was missing a CD. Such a bummer!

Enjoyed listening to this in the car. The narrator doesn't nice job of using a variety of pleasing voices. I was glad that my six-year-old had the book to read along with because so much of the story is dependent upon visual plays on words.

This is a great story no matter your age and it is full of wit and delightful characters. It will appeal to children of school age and will encourage them to understand words and numbers in a humorous way. The talking book saw us across France and Spain in a car.

This was my favourite childhood book. So to hear it being read by David Hyde Pierce was quite frankly on of the best combinations ever! I'm already listening to it a second time and I don't foresee a lagging in my enthusiasm for this incredible, funny and free thinking story.
