Editorial Reviews

From Booklist

*Starred Review* Elizabeth Ashburton had been running from her past for two years, but now it’s about to catch up with her with a vengeance. The minute Elizabeth spots Leland Pymm, now General Pymm, and his contingent of soldiers, she knows she has to escape. Unfortunately, the only person who can help Elizabeth is Rowland Manning, the last man on earth Elizabeth would ever wish to ask for a favor. Elizabeth thought she was a bad judge of character because it was the only thing that could explain how she could be so easily deceived by Leland. But it turns out Elizabeth is really better at judging a person’s real worth than she thought because she turns out to be the only one who sees Rowland for the man of honor he truly is. Expertly spiced with a deliciously subtle sense of wit, deftly seasoned with a superbly nuanced cast of characters, and featuring a plot brimming with lusciously sensual romance and a dash of dangerous intrigue, Secrets of a Scandalous Bride is Nash’s best book yet. --John Charles

If you are attracted to heroes with a darker side, one terrific example of a redeemed villain is found in The Widows Club Series by Sophia Nash. In the third book of the series, Love With the Perfect Scoundrel, we are introduced to the villain of the piece, Rowland Manning. Driven by the hardships of his early life, Rowland is ruthless in his actions, even attempting at one point to kill his own brother. In the fourth book, Secrets of a Scandalous Bride, Rowland is the tortured hero of his own story. We get to know the reasons for his harsh, often brutal behavior. The cruelty and deprivations he suffered in his youth made him a lean, mean, vengeance machine. To keep himself "fighting mean," he even deprives himself of the pleasures of good food, surviving on a daily regimen of rigidly bare meals. One of the ways the heroine breaks through to him is to continue to ply him with delicious food. Gingerbread, with its deep, dark spicy goodness, is a loaded weapon to man so self-deprived. When the gingerbread is served to him by a beautiful, caring woman, how could Rowland not succumb to temptation? Just like The Grinch, Rowland's heart grew three sizes that day! Enjoy this book while indulging in your favorite gingerbread recipe, which, like Rowland, is unexpectedly sweet beneath the tartness!

Really loved this book. Although it is the conclusion of a series, I was able to really enjoy the story without having read the previous books in the series.

Rowland and Elizabeth's story is wonderfully told by Sophia Nash. What I liked most is that Rowland is more of the anti-hero (especially in previous book where he was the villian). He is the bastard son of an Earl. He went out of his way to torment and persecute his half-brother, Michael, but in this story we see that he is really just a product of his circumstances. He was raised in a rookerey and is as described a chameleon. He is no gentleman at all until he meets Elizabeth. Elizabeth sees the haunted soul and falls in love with a man that she is warned off from everyone including his half brother. At the same time Elizabeth brings out the good that is hidden beneath the muck that he was raised in.

Trully a well written novel. For all those who love to root for the underdog, go out and buy this novel. In the end you might just fall in love with Rowland too.

I started the widows club series on a whim, and just kept reading- till this wonderful ending to the series. I would compare them to Stella Riley's Rockliffe series, rhey are just that good. This the entire series.tory has two wonderful endings, a twist at the end that I never saw coming, and characters that you could fall in love with.Worth reading from start to finish.

I did not expect to like this book, because the previous two releases by Nash in this Widows series were not all that great, especially not LOVE WITH THE PERFECT SCOUNDREL. But I loved the hero of this SECRETS OF A SCANDALOUS BRIDE (even while being puzzled by the book's title. Yes, the heroine had a secret, but where was the scandalous bride?). Our hero, Rowland Manning, is a villain in the previous book and the redemption theme here is quite believable and well drawn. Also the romantic relationship that develops between crusty, grumpy, undemonstrative Rowland and friendly, outgoing Elizabeth is a joy to watch. It brought to mind the H/h relationship in Loretta Chase's LORD OF SCOUNDRELS but, mind you, Nash's book is not quite on a par with Chase's. (Few romances I have read come close to that great SCOUNDREL Jessica/Dain romance, with the exception of Darcy and Elizabeth in PRIDE AND PREJUDICE.) The events and happenings in the book are not as well done as the actual romance, with oftentimes puzzling actions on the part of some of the characters. So I'm giving this book 4 stars for the feel-good romantic romance, something that I find lacking in many historical romances lately. Yes, you can find lots of sex and lust in all of the new books, but the additional warm and fuzzy feeling I get with a good romance is usually not there.

I loved this book. Hero and heroine had real issues to overcome, and their coming together helped each other ... And all that was background to a very engaging, compelling, attraction then romance between the two. And - I loved the food-related element. I recommend this book.

Honestly, it was nicely researched. She had a great grasp of the language. It was just a bit twisted up, the plot. It kept jumbling and wasn't a straight path. I've read other works by Nash and liked them a lot more. I'm glad I finished it. If you feel like reading it, you shouldn't be disappointed.

5.0 out of 5 stars Stalked by a war hero
Reviewed in Australia on April 2, 2016
All the elements of good HR are present and work to make this a fun ride. Heroine on the run. Hero who makes surliness into an art form. And the romance is steamy. Some other reviewers feel the plot is too jerky but I like all the action. There are no dull moments.

Elizabeth Ashburton hides from her stalker General Pymm in the carriage of disreputable Rowland Manning. Pyrmont is a gaslighter who convinces the heroine’s friends he is a great guy. Rowland despises the upper class - his duke dad impregnated his mother and threw her onto the street. He takes Elizabeth home with him while he works out her story. There is fun banter as Elizabeth cooks meals to tempt Rowland's appetite. While Rowland refuses to eat, his workers gobble everything up and line up for more. In contrast to the fun is Elizabeth's hopelessness as she is blackmailed by evil Pymm who the nation worships as a war hero.

Rowland’s character is the most interesting in this book. After a horrible childhood he is bitter and likes making people uncomfortable. But he has some truly witty moments...look out for a scene where he takes command of an afternoon tea. While there are welcome moments of humour, this is definitely more drama than comedy. Highly enjoyable.

5.0 out of 5 stars 3 Dimentional Story- Brilliant
Reviewed in the United Kingdom on April 18, 2010
This is by far the best in the series - I think that the reader often gets discouraged because it is a series but each book can be read solusly. Also I am not sure that the previous review is warranted- were they reading the same book? Anyway what makes this story is the depiction of the dark brooding hero in Rowland Manning who is afraid to harbour any feelings or even enjoy the simple parts of life, daren't even get close to anyone for fear of being let down. Along comes Elizabeth Ashburton to disrupt all of those preconcieved notions. He reluctantly rescues her from the clutches of an army officer who had a hand in cuasing the demise of her father during the war. She lives in constant fear that he is to expose her as a spy!!
What is brilliant & well executed is the way that Rowland looks at life & addresses different situations with a very hard exterior & very solid morales. Elizabeth gets to experience this first hand & falls for him instantly as she ends up staying with him. SN writes a very compelling story where the intercation between the two make the pages sizzle in a unique way. All the time you look forward to the word play & scenes between these two- from their first meeting where she forces herself into his carriage, to the meals that she cooks that he discards to the time that he rescues her from the evil army officer, to the climatic confrontation with the prince regent.
The short sharp interaction between the two are well written- another masterpiece by this author- well worth the read.
