Joyce has a real winner in this one!

Can you imagine what it would be like to have a disability such that you thought you'd never find love? And, wouldn't it be worse if your mother confirmed this fear by keeping you at home and sheltered? In this second in the 2-book Delanza series, we meet Sophie O'Neill, who is lame from having fallen down a flight of stairs as a child, but who is also a sensitive, gifted artist.

Set in 1901 in New York and Paris (with a few scenes in Africa), the story begins in Newport Beach (think Atlantic Ocean) as houseguests of Susanne Ralston are gathering for a weekend party. Her daughter (by her first marriage), Sophie, a budding artist, is sketching on the beach when she sees a man she wants to paint. Unbeknownst to her, it is Edward Delanza, the wealthy diamond smuggler and rake who has just returned from Africa. As Sophie watches, the man makes love to a woman, right there on the sand. Sophie is unaware Edward has seen her. Fascinated by the girl he believes to be 18 (she is 20), Edward thinks to redeem himself by being kind to the young woman who has never come out of her shell. But he is more than fascinated as she returns to New York City for her art classes and he follows her.

Suzanne, Sophie's mother, is an interesting and dominating secondary character. She fears Edward is just like her first husband, that handsome rake Jake O'Neill whom she fell for at age 15, and so she tries very hard to keep them apart. It's a story within a story that you will find fascinating.

I reviewed SECRETS, the first book in this 2-book series and only gave it 3 stars because it had story issues (see my review). I do think if you want to see more of Edward, you should read it first. But this book really outshines it. AFTER INNOCENCE is an intriguing, well-told love story set in the world of art at the turn of the century. Joyce describes the life of the artists in Paris, the Impressionists who are changing the face of art. It's also the coming of age of a young woman who has great depth of character. Joyce does unrequited love well and you will feel for Sophie as she makes the tough decision to deny the man she wants insisting on love. She confronts the trials of life and rises magnificently above all that she faces. In real life, Edward would never persist in his pursuit of her. Ah, but this is romance! We love it.

I highly recommend this story. Joyce has delivered a clear 5 star this time.

I would have given this book five stars but I don't like loose ends.
What happended to Lise????? For a minute I was so upset thinking that Jake would take Suzanne back. One person commented that she would like to have see Jake and Suzanne reunite...why? She was a cold mother.
She didn't love her daughter. She called her names, stole her childs money, lied to her and wanted to get rid of her own grandchild. She got her husband arrested and then claimed she loved him. I would have like for Sofie to have known all of this and played out so Suzanne got what she deserved. Also, the book gave the impression that Edward thought that Sofie slept with George and Henry and should have been clarified. Overall this book was great and I couln't put it down.

this is brenda joyce at her best. the prose is beautifully written, the characters sympathetically drawn and the story line makes it difficult to put this book down until the end. i especially loved that the heroine is,despite being a disabled single parent, gutsy enough to move on without the hero and make a life for herself and her child, something one does not find in a lot of romance novels. i also felt the big love scene
was right on the money without being full of phoney love/lust attraction that, again, happens all too often in the genre. this book serves as an example to what can be achieved in romance writing. kudos,ms.joyce!!!

I can't wait to read this again! It was absolutely wonderful, and so, so, so original -- not your usual characters. I loved this book so much, and so fell in love with the characters, that I was sad when it ended. Beautiful story that takes the author to New York, France and Africa. Loved the art history -- not overdone so the story still remained about the characters, but gave the reader a feeling of learning a bit about fine art. Loved it! My absolute favorite.

This book is one of the best romance novels and one of the first that I have ever read and every time I read it it is still good. You enter into a new journey each time you read and you always find stuff that you missed when you first read the book. Brenda Joyce is a fabulous author who knows how to write well written stories.  After Innocence

First off I have to say, I am a die hard Brenda Joyce fan, and very little could make me dislike any of her books. I must say, however, that the number of errors in the Kindle edition almost drove me to distraction. A simple spell checker would fix many of them (i.e. ! instead of I). Having an editor read it through for correction would also help (I would suggest anyone who has reviewed the Kindle edition and realized the problem). I would have rated this a 4 without all the errors (which is pretty much the highest I give except for books I want to read over and over). I'm surprised Ms. Joyce has allowed this to continue, since some of the reviews about the Kindle edition that I read were older.

I don't want this to sound all negative. If you like the kind of stories that Ms. Joyce tells, you will like this one also. It contains a woman who doesn't know her own beauty and passion, a man who recognizes it, and the requisite family member who doesn't want them together. It also has a little mystery involved (which I won't tell you so you can enjoy the story).

Even with the errors, I would go ahead and read this on your Kindle. There was only one word I could not figure out at all and finally had to give up. Most of the errors are easily corrected in context, so go ahead and enjoy. Now I have to find a source for the third story in the series, which is no longer in publication!!!

After Innocence lived up to my expectations from Brenda Joyce. I did not want to put my Kindle down. It is part of a trilogy and this time the end was better than the beginning.
