Editorial Reviews

From School Library Journal

Grade 3–5—Outstanding full-page, full-color photographs are the highlight of this introduction to the theories and concerns regarding global warming and climate change. Simon offers much basic information on the subjects of rising sea levels, ocean temperatures, and greenhouse gases. In addition, he explores the resulting problems of animal survival as well as the standard solutions outlined for both governments and families. While he strongly suggests that global warming is due to man-made causes, he does include the possibility of cyclical warming trends. Although comprehensive for the intended audience, the text is somewhat flat. A short glossary and index may help with more complicated ideas. A useful addition for collections needing well-illustrated introductory material.—Eva Elisabeth VonAncken, Trinity-Pawling School, Pawling, NY

From Booklist

Simon’s consistently high-quality collaborations with the Smithsonian investigate all manner of science topics for young readers, and here take on the timely matter of climate change. Informative and non-condescending, this boils down large, complex issues into understandable concepts, even as it covers the range of current understanding on how we are impacting the planet. Simon distinguishes between weather and climate and offers a succinct explanation of the greenhouse effect and the dangers of rising levels of greenhouse gas emissions. Without being alarmist, he also explains how even a rise of a few inches in sea level could flood populated areas and touches on how the animal world, from butterflies to polar bears, is being impacted. Thoughtfully chosen full-page photos complement and reflect the text; dual pictures of dwindling glaciers and dying coral reefs impart a sense of urgency, while a small sprout of green emerging from parched soil is especially resonant, yet strangely hopeful. The book concludes with realistic ideas on how individuals, families, and communities can help alleviate the planetary pressure. Grades 3-5. --Ian Chipman

Seymour Simon, whom the NY Times called "the dean of [children's science] writers," is the author of more than 250 highly acclaimed science books (many of which have been named Outstanding Science Trade Books for Children by the National Science Teachers Association). His free, educational children's app, SCIENCE FUN TO GO, debuted in the Top 10 of all free children's apps in the Amazon App store, and features in app purchase of original Seymour Simon eBooks, as well as a multitude of free content.

Seymour Simon uses his website, SeymourSimon.com, to provide free downloads of a wealth of materials for educators, homeschoolers and parents to use with his books, including 4-page Teacher Guides for all 26 of his Collins/Smithsonian photo essay books. The site provides multiple resources for kids writing book reports or wanting to explore the online Science Dictionary, and also features the Seymour Science blog highlighting current science news. Educators and families are encouraged to sign up to receive the monthly newsletter from SeymourSimon.com to stay abreast of the latest materials that Seymour Simon is introducing to enrich the reading experience.

He taught science and creative writing in elementary and secondary schools and was chair of the science department at a junior high school in the New York City public school system before leaving to become a full-time writer. "I haven't really given up teaching," he says, "and I suppose I never will, not as long as I keep writing and talking to kids around the country and the world."

Seymour Simon is also a creator and the author of a series of 3D books and a series of Glow-in-the-Dark Books for Scholastic Book Clubs, a series of leveled SEEMORE READERS for Chronicle Books, and the EINSTEIN ANDERSON, SCIENCE DETECTIVE series of fiction books. His books encourage children to enjoy the world around them through learning and discovery, and by making science fun. He has introduced tens of millions of children to a staggering array of subjects; one prominent science education specialist described Simon's books as "extraordinary examples of expository prose."

Seymour Simon has been honored with many awards for his work, including the American Association for the Advancement of Science/Subaru Lifetime Achievement Award for his lasting contribution to children's science literature; the New York State Knickerbocker Award for Juvenile Literature; the Hope S. Dean Memorial Award from the Boston Public Library for his contribution to children's science literature; The Washington Post/Children's Book Guild Award for Non-fiction; the Jeremiah Ludington Award for his outstanding contribution to children's nonfiction; the Empire State Award for excellence in literature for young people; and the Lifetime Achievement Award from the National Forum on Children's Science Books.

In a recent interview Simon was asked if he ever thinks of retiring. "I seem to be working faster and harder than ever. I absolutely don't feel any urge to sit back and look at what I've done. The only things that I'm thinking about are things I'd like to do in the future. I'm planning and doing and continuing to write. It's what I love to do. I remember a story about an anthropologist going to talk to a tribe and he asked them what was their word for "work." Their response was they have no word for work. Everybody does the things that they do in their life. I love that response. I don't differentiate between work and play. Everything I do is something that I enjoy doing - the writing, the research and everything else."

Seymour Simon writes and photographs nature from his hilltop home in Columbia County in upstate New York. You can follow his daily nature walks and see his photographs from the field on Twitter (@seymoursimon) or on his Facebook group page. He also regularly hosts Q&As and sponsors book giveaways on GoodReads.

While many European Countries have been developing strategies and ways of combating global warming for the past 30 years, the U.S. has been debating and arguing whether global warming exists. This book does an excellent job of explaining in simple everyday language exactly what global warming is, on page 6 "GLOBAL WARMING IS HAPPENING BECAUSE OF THE GREENHOUSE EFFECT. A GREENHOUSE IS A HOUSE MADE OF GLASS. THE GLASS LETS IN SUNLIGHT BUT KEEPS WARM AIR FROM ESCAPING. EARTH IS NOT A GREENHOUSE, BUT CERTAIN GASES IN THE ATMOSPHERE ACT LIKE THE GLASS IN A GREENHOUSE. SUNLIGHT PASSES THROUGH EARTH'S ATMOSPHERE AND WARMS THE GROUND. SOME OF THE HEAT BOUNCES BACK INTO SPACE, BUT MUCH OF IT REMAINS TRAPPED NEAR THE GROUND BY CARBON DIOXIDE, WATER VAPOR, AND OTHER GREENHOUSE GASES IN THE ATMOSPHERE". On page 10 "FOR THOUSANDS OF YEARS, THE BALANCE OF GREENHOUSE GASES IN THE ATMOSPHERE HAD NOT CHANGED MUCH. BUT NOW WE BURN HUGE AMOUNTS OF COAL, OIL, AND NATURAL GAS TO GENERATE ENERGY. EVERY YEAR, BILLIONS OF TONS OF CARBON DIOXIDE POUR OUT FROM THE EXHAUSTS OF CARS, TRAINS, TRUCKS, AIRPLANES, BUSES, AND SHIPS AND FROM CHIMNEYS OF FACTORIES. THERE IS 30 PERCENT MORE CARBON DIOXIDE IN THE AIR THAN THERE WAS 150 YEARS AGO". On pages 18-19 "AS TEMPERATURES RISE, THE LEVEL OF THE OCEANS WILL RISE. A RECENT STUDY FOUND THAT IF AVERAGE TEMPERATURES RISE BY 3 DEGREES CELSIUS(5.4 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT), GREENLAND'S ENORMOUS ICE SHEET WILL BEGIN TO MELT AND SEA LEVELS ALL OVER THE WORLD MAY RISE BY A HALF FOOT TO 3 FEET OR MORE. THIS MAY HAPPEN OVER YEARS OR DECADES OR MAY TAKE LONGER THAN A CENTURY. A 3-FOOT RISE IN SEA LEVEL WOULD SWAMP THE GULF COAST AND EVERY EAST COAST CITY FROM BOSTON TO MIAMI. RISING WATERS WOULD COVER LOW-LYING AREAS SUCH AS THE NILE DELTA AND COUNTRIES SUCH AS BANGLADESH. MILLIONS OF PEOPLE WOULD BE FORCED TO MOVE. THE ANARTIC ICE CAP HOLDS ABOUT 90 PERCENT OF THE WORLD'S ICE AND ABOUT 70 PERCENT OF ITS FRESHWATER. IT DOES NOT LOOK AS IF THE ENTIRE ICE CAP WILL MELT ANYTIME SOON, BUT IF IT DOES HAPPEN, SEA LEVELS WOULD RISE 20 OR MORE FEET. NOW, THAT WOULD CAUSE MAJOR FLOODING IN COASTAL AREAS". This book has 32 pages in it so you can read the whole thing on your train or bus commute to or from work, global warming is real and we all need to do something about it.

This is all hype and hysteria. If you believe God, and the words in His Bible, then read the promise made by God that he will never flood the earth again, and the seasons will follow season in seed time and harvest.
Ge 8:21 And the LORD smelled a sweet savour; and the LORD said in his heart, I will not again curse the ground any more for man's sake; for the imagination of man's heart is evil from his youth; neither will I again smite any more every thing living, as I have done.
Ge 8:22 While the earth remaineth, seedtime and harvest, and cold and heat, and summer and winter, and day and night shall not cease.

Wow! This is an amazing information book because it tells the facts about climate change in a straightforward manner with magnificent, telling photos as support. Once again Seymour Simon takes a complex subject and writes about it in language that children can understand without diluting the science. Simon provides an understandable explanation of global warming followed by evidence of its effects. At the conclusion he adds a page telling what nations and governments can do to slow down climate change along with another page on what families can do. A glossary, index, and websites for more information round out this fine book.

It is rather surprising to see this children's book appearing under the respected Smithsonian imprint. Its title says it all, with a glib acceptance of all the current fashionable global warming theories promoted by the IPCC and others. Children deserve much better than this hackneyed and out-of-date pamphlet, which again surprisingly, was published in 2010. It repeats erroneous claims of the imminent demise of the polar bear despite evidence on the ground in Nunuvat, Canada, that they are thriving. Surveys may appear to show a falling population, but then most are carried out by flying biologists (who might find some problem in seeing white animals against a white background). The evidence from the IPCC is deeply flawed owing to faulty computer models, which neglect the effects of water vapour and droplets (clouds). The temperature of the earth has in fact been flatlining for the past decade or more (as the IPCC graphs show clearly), and all those dire warnings of imminent catastrophe are quite baseless. Its call to action (presumably for kids) demands we all use the expensive fluorescent lights, which provide poor illumination and react too slowly to prevent tumbles and falls (especially among the elderly). They have of course been overtaken by LEDs which are far better and are becoming cheaper as time passes. Forget this poor book and give your kids something better!
