Sister and brother Lily and Robert Brewster may not have a penny to their names, but at least they're in good company––times couldn't be tougher in the Hudson River Valley during the Great Depression, and even the much–revered Chief of Police has lost his home. Their poor town has been stripped of its Post Office, too; now mail gets dumped off the trains steaming up the Hudson River, and people have to rummage through the bags to find their letters and packages. When Robert helps a young widow and her newly–arrived German grandfather haul the old man's trunks to his granddaughter's shop, he thinks he may have found a new set of friends––especially the kind train porter who helps them out. But when a red swastika is found painted on the widow's shop window, and the train porter is found dead, Robert knows that something much deeper, and much darker, is happening in his sleepy little town. Even back at Grace & Favor Mansion, where Lily and Robert live, things are falling apart. The Chief of Police has just unearthed a very, very old skeleton––right on the grounds! Could the two murders be related? It's up to Lily and Robert to find out the truth, before their quiet community is town apart by hatred, secrets, and a killer who may have set his sights on Grace & Favor...

I love Grace and Favor mysteries. Jill Churchill is an amazing writer that has more or less disappeared from bookstores, urging me to book this book via Amazon (lucky for them!). Everyone who loves murder/mystery books should read this serie and ask the publisher to display more of Jill churchill books everywhere in the counry as well as abroad. I am living in Europe and my friends (between 25-45 and even 80y old family members) all await me to lend them my last J Churchill book. She scores higher than Dan Brown among my university/college educated friends and colleagues/assistants. At least J Churchill, unlike most american novelists (incl Dan Brown) doesn't cite unaccurate foreign language sentences or even less accurate geographical/economical facts in her books. Maybe her editor is better at reviewing her books before publishing them or, as I said before, she is an amazing writer and she is not enough publicised!!!

I have enjoyed all of Jill Churchill's books, both the Jane Jeffry series and the Grace and Favor series. I would love to read more Grace and Favor books but as far as I know there are only six and this is the sixth.

Love this series. There is one called "Smoke Get In Your eyes." Supposedly it has been published but can't find it. Home someone knows where this book can be found. As for "Who's Sorry Now?" both brother and sister have evolved greatly and Grae and Favor as well.

Personally, I like Churchill's Grace and Favor mysteries better than her Jane Jeffrey series -- probably partly because, being set during the Great Depression, they have the flavor of a historical novel.

The usual cast of residents in a small town by the Hudson River, led by Robert and Lily Brewster, works its way amiably through yet another murder in their town, making this book a nice, relaxing bedtime read.

I just read his book and enjoyed it very much. However, the ending was sort of flat in that the villain was sent to asylum for criminally insane but what happened to the sheriff? Did he fully recover? Did the new deputy and pretty young nurse start dating? Did the Brewsters invite any more boarders to live in their beautiful home?
The worst part is there's no follow up Grace and Favor books. Who's Sorry Now seems to be the last in the series. I really wanted to learn more about the lives and outcomes of these characters.

I have 2 Jill Churchill audios from this Grace and Favor series. They are wonderful stories and having read the books do not leave too much out so you can understand the story I am so happy that I was able to purchase them. They arrived promptly and I just love listening at night.

I wish the author could or would write more of these. Brings the Depression to life in a very engaging way.

A clever cozy mystery series set in upstate New York, Hudson River valley, a familiar setting. Interesting re-occurring characters round out each story.

2.0 out of 5 stars Brewster兄妹の活躍を楽しみにしていたのに
Reviewed in Japan on November 12, 2006
