Two decades after the Civil War, first-generation Irish-American Zachary O'Hara, son of a legendary Marine and a force of a man in his own right, finds himself playing a critical role as the very existence of the Marine Corps is being decided. If he can help persuade the Secretary of the Navy that the Marines will be crucial to America's security in years to come -- all the while hefting a heavy, secret weight in his heart -- he'll save the Corps and make his career. But there's an obstacle in his path that this warrior hadn't planned on. Amanda Blanton Kerr, the daughter of a ruthless industrialist, is on a mission of her own; passionate, obstinate, and whip-smart, she's an heiress poised to blaze a trail for all women.

O'Hara's Choice is the story of the inevitable collision of these two handsome, fighting spirits, in which getting their souls' desires could jeopardize everything they -- and their parents before them -- scraped and struggled to achieve.

Having read what i thought were ALL of Leon Uris novels, O'Hara's Choice has been a great surprise. Having served in the Marine Corps during the Vietnam conflict, this book has a very good insight as to how the Marine Corps evolved and the struggles it went through to establish a place in the history of America. Mr. Uris (also a Marine) has a perfect picture of the Marine Corps. Combined with his novel Battle Cry, a reader will get from the bottom up, a reality of what makes young men WANT to be a Marine.

Good read, but bit too much on the romance side for my taste. I was a mite uncertain as to the historisity of the Corps material.

I received a hardback copy of this book as a young Lance Corporal. It motivated me then because it is an easy read. Now that I've read it again years later, it reminds me of all of the optimism that we share as marines. It is an uplifting book that i recommend to all marines.

I had never seen this book in the days when Uris was popular it is a little departure from his normal style but an excellent story. Well worth the read

Leon Uris often has a beautiful turn of phrase and a straightforward way of bringing history to the level where you learn your history and get very involved with the story of Zach and Amanda. I couldn't put this book down.

Good novel about the early days of the USMC. Not as much action as other Uris books, but still not a bad read.
