****Amelia Peabody's Egypt was originally published in 2003; minor changes are being made to the July 2017 edition, but it basically the same book****The Egypt that so enticed and enchanted intrepid archaeologist-sleuth Amelia Peabody in the late nineteenth and twentieth centuries was a place of wonder, mystery, danger, and the lure of antiquity. Now, with this monumental volume of Egyptian culture, history, and arcania, readers will be able to immerse themselves in the great lady's world more completely than ever before.

Journey through the bustling streets and markets of Cairo a hundred years ago. Surround yourself with the customs and color of a bygone time. Explore ancient tombs and temples and marvel at the history of this remarkable land -- from the age of the pharaohs through the Napoleonic era to the First World War. Also included in Amelia Peabody's Egypt are a hitherto unpublished journal entry and intimate biographies of the Emersons and their friends, which provide a uniquely personal view of the lives, relationships, opinions, politics, and delightful eccentricities of mystery's first family, as well as unforgettable pearls of wit and wisdom from everyone's favorite fictional Egyptologist herself.

Containing nearly 600 black-and-white photographs and illustrations, and articles by numerous experts, Amelia Peabody's Egypt sparkles with unforgettable glimpses of the exotic and the bizarre, the unusual and the unfamiliar -- a treasure trove that overflows with Egyptological riches, along with wonderful insights into the culture and mores of the Victorian era, including the prevalent attitudes on empire, fashion, feminism, tourists, servants, and much more.

A one-of-a-kind collection that offers endless hours of pleasure for Peabodyphiles and Egypt aficionados alike, here is a tome to cherish; a grand and glorious celebration of the life, the work, and the world of the incomparable Amelia Peabody.

Editorial Reviews

From Publishers Weekly

Fans of Peters's bestselling series featuring Amelia Peabody Emerson and her family (Crocodile on the Sandbank, etc.) will welcome this companion volume, which entertainingly blurs fact and fiction. In her role as "editor" of Mrs. Emerson's journals, Peters provides a preface, while other contributors supply articles on the historical and cultural background of Egyptology. (Typical is "`Lesser Breeds without the Law': An Insightful Diatribe on the Victorian Attitude Towards Other Cultures & Peoples," by Barbara Mertz, the real name of the pseudonymous Peters, who has a Ph.D. in the subject.) One section, "The People of the Journals," straightfacedly presents period photographs of the members of the extended Emerson clan. Filled with black-and-white illustrations of people and places (credit for the design goes to Egyptophile Dennis Forbes), this attractive book both informs and enchants. The jacket art of three Victorian ladies inspecting a temple fits the tone of the text perfectly.

It is a big, beautiful book. I have only read a bit, but I am enjoying it.

The lengthy volume is full of pictures of Egypt as Amelia Peabody would have seen it, and chapters full of background detail for her many adventures in the books. Glad I bought it!

Lots of information about Egypt, although sometimes it's hard to tell the fictional history from the real information. It uses old photos, including of various characters in the series, to describe Egypt and Egyptology at the end of the Victorian age and early 20th century.

Amelia Peabody’s Egypt is a fantastic melding of history (as we now believe it to be) and the fictional exploits of the Emersons. The reader must remember that if any of the Emerson’s are mentioned, that particular section is not factual. The writing, the section arrangement, the photographs, and the engraving prints are all AWESOME!

I got on to Barbara Mertz (writing as Elizabeth Peters in the Amelia Peabody series) when watching History of Egypt from the Learning Company and was hooked early on. Library has this book but wanted a copy of my own and glad to have it. The lithographs of the early days of exploration worth the price of the book. Not sure if she will write another book in the series but certainly hope she is up to doing it. Last one came out last year. Have read the other books she has written both fiction and non fiction and am impressed with the range of her ability. Still working on the books she wrote under another pen name - Barbara Michaels - and will be sad when complete all the 80 plus books she has written. If her wit does not get a chuckle or smile out of you then you have probably passed to the west bank of the Nile already! And the twists and turns of her mysteries make reading her books a pleasure. As an egyptologist she adds another dimension to her writing on ancient Egypt but she does not let pedantry get in the way of a great yarn and a good mystery. As with any author some of her books are better than others but few of hers do not rise to five star ranking. Our library was missing one volume of her work and ordered it through Amazon and donated it after reading myself.

I had originally waited to write this review until I finished the book. Then I realized that some of you might be retired by then, and not bother to read reviews.

This is, in short, an astonishing book. It's massive.

It's HEAVY.

And it's loaded with stuff. Pictures, descriptions, biographies. Heaps of it. The book doesn't add any new story (really) to this series, but it is a very handy, alphabetized reference guide to the people, and the places, and the animals.

I highly recommend for any fan. The only possible way this book could have been better (for me) is if it were one of the vault type books, with removable letters and maps and....stuff. You know the kind of book I mean, right? That's the only way this could have been improved upon.

Grab your copy, and head out with Amelia and family. Enjoy!

The Amelia Peabody mystery series by Egyptologist Elizabeth Peters, is a fascinating collection of novels set in Egypt at the end of the 19th century. The novels are so much more interesting if the reader has an understanding of the setting, and this Compendium does a great job of answering any questions or confusions the reader might have - mythology, history, vocabulary, and brief bios of all the characters that appear in the novels. The Compendium is chock-full of turn-of-the-century illustrations that help bring the novels to life. After you've read a few Amelia Peabody novels, go to Egypt. There's nothing more thrilling than taking a cruise on the Nile from Luxor to Aswan.

5.0 out of 5 stars Ein gelungener Bildband
Reviewed in Germany on August 11, 2016

Brilliant. It has been criticized in other reviews for being written as if the Peabody-Emerson family and their exploits and achievements were real. They are not, of course - just take that with a pinch of salt and this is an entertaining addition to the annals, full of genuine facts and information, and very readable. Superb!
