The legal documents of Elephantine have historically been approached in three different ways. Firstly, in comparison with later Aramaic traditions. Secondly, as part of a self-contained system, and more recently from an Assyriological standpoint. Alejandro F. Botta presents a fourth possible approach, through examination of the Egyptological background.
