Reviewer:Jeffrey S. Rosenthal, MD(Bridgeport Hospital)
Description:This is a consumer oriented book that asks questions that should be broached before patients undertake reconstructive or purely cosmetic orientated breast surgery.
Purpose:The authors wish to dispel many of the inaccuracies that surround surgery of the breast. Doing so, they have offered a way for consumers of these procedures to make decisions from a platform based upon germane questions that should be addressed and their answers. They have admirably achieved their intended goal.
Audience:The duo who conceived this book addresses both the marketing and medical information necessary to allow readers to make correct decisions concerning breast surgery. This book is expressly oriented towards women and the occasional man who is contemplating surgery of the breast. Professionals who interact with those having breast surgery, such as physicians and surgeons, psychologically oriented caregivers, and medical and nursing students, as well as family members who desire an enhanced understanding of what this undertaking entails, will reap the benefits of this book.
Features:The book commences with a brief overview of how to choose a surgeon, what breast procedures are available, and why one would desire surgery. Medical terminology when used is defined in the margins along with additional web addresses and sites that may provide further information. The remaining chapters sequentially address safety of surgery, breast implants (saline and silicone), treatment of breast cancer with an overview of the subsequent reconstruction, and the enhancing, reducing, and lifting of the breast. A concluding chapter dealing with issues pertinent to all breast surgery as well as a useful glossary of terms round out this book. The prospective patient is offered information about the expected outcome of each procedure and what to expect of the surgery and the days following this undertaking. Individual accounts of breast surgery patients are peppered throughout, offering a personalized perspective on many of these emotional issues. One should not use this useful guide as the sole source of information, but rather as either a good starting point or source to assist in organizing the process.
Assessment:Breasts have taken on a symbolic meaning in our society that extends beyond their mere physical attributes. Psychological and body image issues along with the surgical expectations are highlighted in this breast surgery primer. It is an excellent starting point for those wishing to test the waters on these themes.
